Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

A potential blackout of Disney’s channels including ESPN on New Year’s eve Verizon's Fios subscribers

Did they really need to wait until New Year's eve to try to negotiate this? I understand that the companies that have, or are going to launch their own streaming services are trying to leverage their power towards outside carriers ( the same thing AT&T did with Dish) but at the end, the only ones that suffer are the customers. The same customers that pay the bills. This behavior of those companies, if you ask me, should be subject to legal inquiries, but that aside it is disgraceful that such big companies show that degree of unprofessional behavior towards the same people they want to appeal to.

In this case I have to support Verizon. I took down my 41 inch Plasma TV 9 years ago due to being forced to pay the cable companies/satellite companies for c-ap channels I did not want. I quit watching sports years ago when a football game went from 1 1/2 hours to 4+ hours ( due to advertising, etc. ) on a Saturday. I do not need ESPN, religious, foreign language, shopping or a slew of other mindless programming.

NetFlix, Hulu and OTA and I am plenty happy and save a bundle of money each month.

Disney isn't something parents need, those days are long gone We have Netflix kids mode and there's an absolute mountain of content in there, nicely curated, categorized, and contained within a walled garden. We might subscribe to Disney+ for the Marvel content, but when Disney pulls out of Netflix it won't really affect things in my household.

As for linear TV? It's an anachronism and the kids have almost no idea what it is We only ever use the cable package as a means to authenticate to the Disney streaming apps on Roku, and frankly that doesn't get much use anyway.

And meanwhile I've been holding back Prime video, they're got enough to watch as it is.

Only 6% of America is will to pay anything to have the ESPN channel.

https://www.outkickthecoverage.com/only-6-of-consumers-would-pay-20-a-month-for-espn-011416/

ESPN loses 2 million more subscribers in 2018....even more expected in 2019.

ESPN IS DEAD!

And they want Verizon to pay....not millions......but Hundreds of Millions for a long-term deal??????

NBC news: ESPN is the most expensive channel for distributors

Fox News: “Disney who owns ESPN is currently proposing that Verizon pay hundreds of millions of dollars more for its programming, despite the fact that many of its key networks are experiencing declining viewership.

"In addition to the proposed rate increase, Disney is also demanding we include, and pay for, another regional sports channel, the ACC Network, in order to continue bringing you all the other Disney and ESPN networks we do today. The rising cost of programming is the biggest factor in higher TV bills and we are standing up to networks like Disney, refusing to accept these huge increases.”

All that for college football "playoffs"

You can be the !doit pal Verizon will not!

The guy saying ESPN is dead is an id--t. I don’t enjoy their pundits but they have the college football playoffs and SEC network. It’s not going anywhere.

And the negotiations started a while back This is nothing new. Most cable networks have had this problem and go till the every end to reach agreement

ESPN is a dead network....not dying....it's officially dead.

Disney, on the other hand, is a network parent's need for the children.

It's unfortunate that you can't separate these two networks because Verizon giving anything more than 1 penny to ESPN is a crime in itself and I would compare it to paying a milkman to deliver milk to a box outside your front door....it's obsolete.

No one today watches the ESPN channel .....They get ONLY the sports they need on their phone or stream.
