Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

People actually enjoy working here?

Who are you? I'm honestly curious, who are the people who have made sure Chevron ends up on Glassdoor's 2019 Best Places to Work list? Is this some kind of a joke? Do we even work at the same company?

I am nearing my end at Chevron and will retire early next year with just over 15 years at Chevron. I came from BP before and left because of Macondo. So, I have a great perspective of differences between Chevron and BP. I can honestly, Chevron was a great company up until about 4 years ago when the culture started changing. In the macro, Chevron hires only the mid-average of employees whearas BP hires top 25%. Chevron promotes based on behaviors whereas BP promotes on what you achieved and what value you can bring. Chevron increases salary based on how well you go-along to get-along, whereas BP salary increases based on whether you achieved your objectives. All-in-all I would recommend BP over Chevron if you wanted to achieve a satisfying career, and Chevron if you take more pleasure measuring your career based on how well you agree perceived by your team.

If you put up with bullying its your own fault, no need to be weak or servile. Act like an adult and use the systems available to protect your own interests. Document everything and make your case to leadership and HR. Most of these posts are baseless and immature flailing at an imaginary enemy because they are forced to compete in the real world of American business. Wake up and buck up. Its 2019 and welcome to the dog eat dog world of modern society. Life is tough so learn to compete and strengthen yourself; otherwise don't expect to come out on top of highly competitive situations. So the company pays well, great benefits and extremely rare levels of retirement and pension.... I guess you assume that everything is gonna be easy, fair, warm and fuzzy; get a grip. Its business with all the highs and lows; good and bad; don't think everything is perfect; who cares; go work at Walmart and see what that gets you. Stop thinking like a wimp; this is not pre-school.

They should poll the families of Chevrons fatalities - see what their feedback is on this 'great' company.

Look for your notice to start preparing PMP's for 2019. Most of you will get 2's at the end of the year as system prescribes. Your supervisor will be optimistic going into it and so will you. At end of the year you will get quietly ranked behind closed doors. And by early next year, you'll get the song and dance that you did well to get a 2. Might as well face it that if you got a 2 last year, chances are good you will get a 2 again. Ha Ha Ha Ha. Now if you got a 1 or +2 then enjoy it because the people behind you are going to be a little envious, particularly since they see your efforts and outcomes not much different than theirs. Ha Ha Ha

When bullying, persecution and work place harassment, while making your target pay for it, is part of your culture, what do you expect OP? People love an environment where they can bully others and when there isn't any blowback, why wouldn't they think its a great place to work?

I guess if it was a lot of fun they wouldn’t pay you. But they do pay you. A fortune. And it’s called Work. So do your best and quit complaining that it is not fun enough. Save your bloated salary and take a trip to Disneyland, Vegas or Bangkok if you like fun. Just don’t confuse Fun with Work.

Working at Chevron and enjoying working at are 2 different things. The pay and benefits are pretty good, but the work environment can be lousy and make you very unhappy/miserable, depending on the work group and supervisor/manager. It is difficult to change employers not knowing if the new job will be any better. Some are very happy here and some are not. It is the same everywhere.

I don’t enjoy working here at Chevron anymore. I loath the job and my pain in the a$$ supervisor. I only show up these days for the paycheck. I count the long days until I can finally leave this place for good. Two more years from now in January 2021 and I’ll be out of here, retired and enjoying life.

-2eof has probably never done several continuous years of PMP's to understand the true nature of the process. If you have been in the ranking sessions and see higher management perceptions versus what you have observed in action on a day-to-day basis for the employees being ranked then you would probably have agreed with -1evi. System is meant to drive employees to work competitively against each other, minimize lawsuits, and minimize financial impact on company. It's certainly a win for the company with limited upside for the majority of vastly productive employees who are forced to fit the bell curve within their PSG levels. And at this point in the process, the most vocal individuals tend to influence perception and ultimate placement in the +2 and 1 categories regardless of the comparative value and efficiency created for organization.

-gew, It's nice that you let us all know that your type thinks that Chevron is the best company in the world but the OP's question was more targeted at why the average employee would post such glaring reviews, not people like you.

If CNAEP upstream spent half of the utterly ridiculous social engineering budget instead on the core business of finding and producing oil and gas, we might generate serious earnings. Instead we spend half the day on bs like Workplace. Please make Workplace GO AWAY. What a HUGE waste of time and resources.

What a foster cluck of a company. You can be proud of the. 60 billion spent on Gorgonzola and the co2 injection compressors limiting production to probably negative rates of return on the asset

If you are not happy working for Chevron then you have two options. Hand in your resignation and go. Alternatively get off your rear end, stop complaining and find something in Chevron you want to do. The company is full of options for those who want to make a career in the organisation.

Dead end jobs are the new norm. -1sld sounds like he has worked hard all his/her life trying to rationalize his/her existence. As a +35 yr employee, as soon as you don't fit the mold of new vision of an energetic work force you will be tossed aside. -1sld would be better off by quit trying to paint the picture of hard work and everything will be wonderful working 12 hrs a day... it won't be. PMP fits the bell curve and you have to manage that as a priority. Perception is key. Fake your way through hard effort and you will come out ahead, Belittle your peers in a subtle way to come out ahead. Company is all about perception to masses and the media so why shouldn't you take same approach. Working hard won't get you anywhere. Just be loud and sound like you know the best course of action. Nowadays most are naive and have no clue if what they are hearing is actually true,

Chevron is not perfect by any means. But as someone with over 30 years of work experience, in several different business arenas and a wide variety of work environments, there are many highly desirable things about the organization. I have been in the military, was self-employed for 10 years, worked in manufacturing, the technical/ industrial trades and business management. Yes, I am over 50 and over the course of those 30+ years in the workforce, I changed jobs every 4 to 6 years for both personal advancement and to suit my changing interests as I grew professionally. Each career move was for either more money or for a more interesting line of work or sometimes for a new challenge and opportunity to gain broader life experience. I can honestly say that the total pay, benefits and remuneration package offered by Chevron is very hard to find elsewhere. Not impossible but difficult. However, at the end of the day you have to find a way to do things that you enjoy and can serve some personal purpose. We all need money to survive. If you like your work, can obtain some sense of worth from your occupation and serve the company's interest while doing so then it works. If you can't, then move on and find another way to earn a living. If you have more to complain about then you are thankful for, IMO you are doing both the company and yourself a disservice by staying on. Be brave and seek out new opportunities for yourself. If you stay you are either lazy or fearful of not being able to succeed elsewhere. People deserve to pursue their goals and aspirations but organizations deserve your dutiful service for their pay. You do owe your effort, skill, abilities and time for your pay. Nothing is free. It’s a deal on both sides, don't like the deal you have; resign and move on or eventually you will be fired anyway. Have things you want to change, make the effort to work within the system to change them. Speak up and take calculated risks when you see fit, cowards are rarely content and even less likely to be respected. Bottom line, quit your $%^&ing and get some things done, either for yourself or the company you work for, eventually you have to be willing to compromise and commit to something. No job or company is perfect for everyone. Find your personal sweet spot.

A good place to work (a funded pension with a lump sum option; annual bonus and a 8% match on your 2% 401(k) contribution)) as long as your department management team has your respect (by and large--- I got to work with folks I respected--- my job satisfaction plummeted when I worked for the self-aggrandizing management). Good project work and global travel opportunities. Petroleum industry is not for the faint of heart--- crude oil prices control CAPEX, potential cost cutting measures, et. al. You have to get comfortable with more jobs moving to Houston and what can be exhausting travel requirements.

Not as bad as this board makes it seems (you might like it---- if you don't--- you should be well prepared to seek other opportunities)

The politically correct, multicultural, gender confused snow flakes, who only work half of their scheduled Friday and attend meetings for 10-15 hours every week think Chevron is the best company in the world.

The people posting on Glassdoor are fake reviews or those who think that posting good reviews will somehow save their a$$ by currying favor with the Chevron types who monitor these kinds of sites. Won’t happen, folks. When it’s your time to be yanked, you will be gone faster than you realize. Always speak the truth and be honest with yourself.
