What's behind GM's layoffs? Disclaimer: I do not work for GM or any other company in the industry. Just curious about what's driving the big reorg and huge job cuts.

Not enough cash that is "liquid". That is why they offered the 18,000 salary employees who have worked there prior to 2006 to take the Voluntary Severence Program. Then they don't have to pay into anymore pension funds.
