Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

Can someone explain why some departments offered Buuouts?

Why are some departments offered Buyouts and other departments given no option, you are let go. In IT one whole was allowed to offer them and another area did not? Was this decided by Directors? Does this occur in othere departments?

The buyout offered to some in IT was nothing more than allowing people to volunteer to be laid off. Same package. But reasoning being if 10 people want to go, let them and save 10 other jobs. Maybe they were ready for early retirement or looking for another job anyway. To me it makes sense to ask for volunteers before going in with the ax randomly cutting jobs. As a manager being asked to cut 5 jobs and I didn’t have 5 low performers, I would much prefer to do it that way.

That's an easy question. It's cheaper to offer a buyout than to proceed with a severance. They can save money that way. A severance package comes with many benefits, including insurance continuation. A buyout is a lump sum paid to the employee to "cut" liability from the employer. A buyout looks attractive, but it's not. A buyout releases your right to collect unemployment and other benefits. Plus you can't sue if you felt the need to do so for wrongful termination. Now why some department offer and some do not is beyond my knowledge. It's just more corporate BS to shift attention away from the company.
