Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

Transfer?

Anybody knows if transfer to another location will be made available to people who are being laid off?

I see there are some openings available in the company throughout the U.S. (which in itself makes no sense, but I'll stay on topic,) so why not give establish employees a chance at them first?

I know not everybody can just pick up and move, but some might want to.

Read the contract. Yes you have to be given chance at openings before new hires are brought in to any plant in the US if your UAW. But with all these layoffs it could be years before there are enough openings for everyone. So it will depend on your seniority. If your salary than your probbley done If they havnt already told you your going. I know some that already know and have known were their going. .

I am in Lordstown and I was told no. I've heard that they expect that 10 to 20 percent of folks that will be let go may be allowed to come back, you'd need to have very specific skills that align with what they play to do in the future (you can guess what that is easily)...

The premise of this whole exercise is to trim the fat. New openings are to attract lower salary workers. Laid off is to get rid of high salary workers. Sure, you might be able to get a transfer if your skill matches an opening, but from a company perspective, this adds no value to their bottom-line.
