Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

Utah / Rocky Mountain Service Unit Mechanical

12 Car / Toolmen furloughed today and 18 more Journeymen Carmen will be furloughed in 2 weeks. Yes they told us they will be furloughing more, why not just pay them all to stay home? They will also be moving half of the remaining roster to Ogden from Salt Lake and eliminating Carmen from Roper yard, with no Job Agreement because they are calling it a "Modified T-Plan" instead of transfer of work to avoid having to pay any kind of job agreement, wage protection or moving packages. But Abe Cerda stated no more cuts on the Northern region for mechanical car.

I don't understand why railroaders can't see this point of view. We are so distant from the average blue collared worker wages and work condition. A railroad worker is like a Fox News viewer they only see thing one way without nuance or counter perspective. No one carries about our plight lol so you work 24/7 but you earn $120k+ in doing that. Those millions of American working 50 hours a week making minimum wages with no benefits or retirement plan don't care about some highly paid union worker. We are the one percent now, America loves the rich Wall Street billionaire, we elected one President. But do a poll on union workers, (public or private) whether they are to highly paid? I bet you the majority would vote yes.

No doubt the union bosses have become part of the club. And I don’t think it matters whether the President is a Republican or Democrat anymore. Big Tech and Warren Buffet were all up on Hillary and Obama; both of whom are plenty chummy with Wall Street...

I don’t know if you’ve seen the news in the last ten years but the public doesn’t regard unions as highly as they used to. Taking your grievances public would get zero support. And with a Republican president you’d get nowhere anyway.

If the company wants to lay-off employees then you’re powerless to do anything about it... that is unless you had job numbers negotiated into your contracts.

This is just going to go on and on until there’s a skeleton crew left for engineering/maintenance and operations. Most of our jobs can be done by a contractor for less money with no labor bargaining issues by the carrier or the unions.

You are never guaranteed a job for life anymore in ANY industry, it’s a real shame because a lot of us have given our all for the success of UPRR and “at the end of the day” we are just numbers on a spreadsheet and they can line them out whenever they want to. Do your best at work, stay up to speed on your skills and upgrade them when you can because it’s ultra competitive out in the “real” world. Have a mindset that looks out for #1 and is always trying to stay ahead of this kind of garbage.

The Unions are not the issue, we live in a day and age where the shareholders and stock markets control the value and direction of our employment. The Unions gave up their balls a long time ago. Wake up to the new America my Brothers and Sisters, work hard, save and enjoy what you have today, it may be gone tomorrow.

Union is Not there to Protect Your Job , that is up to You .. The Union is there to protect your rights .. So many have an attitude that they are owed because they showed up and that is one reason why we are losing our jobs ... The Union Motto is

" 8 Hours Work for 8 Hours Pay " , but how many can actually say they work 8 hours ..

I do agree GREED is a company problem and I Do Agree the Unions need more strength , but the Union gets its strength from how we do our jobs ..

You want the best Union , then you have to be the best worker.

There is Guilt on everyside of this problem.

We need to vote these Union Officers out of office. All they focused on was healthcare and we know how well that turned out

We need to change the vacation and personal leave requirements. There should be more time off!

Our pay is pathetic for the amount of bull we put up with. There are no incentives for going above and beyond.

They need to offer safety bonuses on an annual basis and longevity bonus for EACH employee.

Glad to see so many Armchair Union Officers on here commenting, have any of you ever sat as a Union Officer? I'm sure those that are trying to represent you, would gladly step aside if you feel you could do more and better. If you don't like what's going on ... step up, then maybe, just maybe you will see its not as easy as you think it is. If you don't want to step up, then maybe you should try and support and help the ones who are working for you. A Union is only as strong as its weakest link.

A union is only as strong as its weakest member. So when times were good what did each member do to make their union better? It’s easy to blame the union if you never stepped up to try to make it better. I hope each member realizes that the company is cutting the jobs; not the unions. The company can cut jobs. The union or each union member can excersise their right to bump by seniority. Eventually the company still cuts jobs that people once performed. It s---s but I agree, but the union can’t keep your job.

Ahhhhh, you must be one of those anchors that they keep talking about on this thread or a local chairman. You must be one of those who isn't affected by all these cuts. OUR BROTHERS AND SISTERS have lost their jobs at the worst possible time! Gods speed to whoever got furloughed and may you find another job fast.

How about the union stands up for its brothers? How about we stand together instead of having everything taken away and rolling with it we stand up! What we pay dues for? So they can take away our breaks, find between the lines to move people, so the ones who are left are expected to do the same amount of work? “ enlighten us” u must be management!"

No dumb a$$, I'm a Mechanic. Our unions can only do so much. To think that our unions can prevent a lay off, proves that you're an id--t

A “Mechanic” or a Carman? We pay our union to do all they can and they arnt! Like said above strike even if only for 3 days see how many trains leave a yard! Your right dumb a$$ they can’t prevent layoffs but they can fight for a proper working environment and for the lives that old heads made after 25 yrs and are now getting laid off! U seem like a real dip sh!? Just sayin

I am a member of the union and I've never seen anyone in ten years ever work 6 hours straight, without down time, let's not get crazy. Also you can't work ten hours without overtime unless you're at a shop that works 4 10's. Regardless of those small details. There are so many anchors they are dragging you down, I think if you're a worker you should very disappointed with the union. The union should police itself, we should be calling out all the turds circling the bowl. It isn't right for some of these young guys to get laid off when we have those anchors. If you think the union is doing everything they can, good I envy your optimism. I don't believe they are, if they were things would look differently.

Fully agreed to the” toothless” and to the “ contractual 20 min lunch” comment u must not be a brother because u work a 10 hr day and not stop till 6hrs in! Also some of us love what we do and arnt “ anchors” what about us huh ? Just keep paying dues and get harassed by management while uppers get bonuses and record profits!

The only contractual break you have in mechanical is a 20 min paid lunch. Why isn't the union trying organize scab shops that are popping up all over. Why aren't they being more public with the cuts going on expressing the potential harm to communities due to not enough inspectors finding dangerous defects that could cause injury or death to the general public. Why aren't the unions trying to get rid of all the anchors we work with and keeping the guys who actually work. The union is in bed with the company just like the fra.

Ya and where’s the “union” in all this? Just making everyone comfortable instead of standing up for its workers just like our breaks getting taken away all the other things the company are pulling! I guess until there are no more mechanical and the unions pockets are dry will they stand up for what we pay for!

Abe said no “foreseen” cuts in the next couple weeks. Certainly not defined, wouldn’t feel comfortable with that.

Abe Cerda will tow the company talking points, he is not to be trusted. The union has been castrated and had no power to affect change. Wish I had an opportunity to opt out of paying union dues!
