Vsp federal tax

Is there any way to avoid the Federal Taxes other than filing exempt. I have already filed exempt for state.

What is the fed tx rate.

If your spouse is employed, if available make sure they max out their 401K including catchup if eligible. If you get another job in 2019 and a 401K is available, max your 401K including catchup if eligible.

Don't play with the IRS. Anything could jump up and bite off your ability to repay them. EXEMPT is a war symbol, it is already their money and they show up in a Battleship at your humble abode.. No one can create wealth while leveraging debt. No not one.

You don't want to skip paying the taxes....you will still owe them the year after anyway...and it will be a huge chunk of change

My understanding is NO 401K $$$ can be taken out of any of the severance pay.

Put the maximum of amount you can into 401k. Even in the worst case if you want to withdraw from 401k as hardship- you can avoid penalties of 10% if you are above 60.

If for example, you don’t want to work for a year due to some reasons. You can withdraw 24k next year by paying 10% penalties. Being 24k is the standard deduction… You will be to escape with 10% penalties rather than 40-50% today. If you are above 60…you can escape that 10% penalties also. When you are doing such withdrawals move to a state with no state tax….

STI = short term incentive. Aka bonus pay. And don’t forget I top of that 22% they will also deduct social security and Medicare, which totals around 7.2 %. So now you’re close to 30% taken out. Granted you may get some back when you file your tax return depending on your effective tax rate.

I don't think you can change the withholding on a bonus like payment. 22% sounds right.

But, you can file an new W4 and increase your deductions on your regular pay.

BTW, what is "STI"?

I've heard anywhere between 30-40%. I see that WnIVqdx-iwj says 22%.

I'd go back and check how the STI was taxed earlier this year that'd be the best indicator

There’s no way I know of to avoid the tax rate. It will be taken out no matter what you put on your W4. At least that’s what I’ve experienced when trying to reduce the withholding on the STI payment. No matter what I did I ended up with getting only 60% of it take home.
