Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

How can you think about a raise right now?

I'm seriously shocked that there are Cisco employees who are thinking about a raise right now. How firmly does your head need to be stuck in the sand for you to make thinking about a raise your priority?

We are having major layoffs, we will continue to have major layoffs next year. Those of us who still have a job by this time next year will be lucky. And some are worried about a raise.

People never cease to amaze me.

It seems you are very naïve and immature and do not understand how businesses in general work. I did read a book explaining that and in my own experience I can tell you that employers in general will reward 10%-20% of top employees. It does not matter thousands are being laid off, leadership will always consider and take care of top performers in their view. So yes, it is common that people will get promoted and take pay increases now matter how many are being laid off. I never will forget a certain major company I worked with that had a mass layoff. Same day people were being let go out of the building, the director appeared in a brand new BMW Alpine 750i fully loaded. It was really tough on lot of people, but as I said, that is business and she was successful in what she is was doing.

Life goes on, even after a round of layoffs. Get over it.

The only way to get a raise is to jump jobs. Do like Chuckie. ...do not stay in one job for more than 3 years.

Chuckie made $21 million last year.

This is business, and employees have to look out for themselves and their families first. If you have in-demand skills and work for Cisco by choice (rather than lack of options) then exercise your freedom and lobby for pay and RSU increases.

Every year that you don't get at least an inflationary pay-rise you're getting an effective pay cut.

Employment is a two-way street. Cisco have to do their part.

Good financial results can be a byproduct of creative financial reporting ninja skills

Well, to be honest, the last couple of quarters have been very good financial results for the company. In an SP all hands yesterday, the question of compensation and stalled promotions came up. He basically said we'll have to string together 5 quarters of this sort of performance to make a difference.

The logic was that the SP business was "lumpy" - it certainly is for us poor s---ers. When business goes down, we get hit very hard. When it's flat, we still get hit hard. When it goes up, we get "resource alignment". Never seems to be good enough to look after us.

I agree with OP. We all are riding a train that is running on a dilapidated track. This train is destined to be doomed so instead of worrying about our lives we are expecting stewardess to bring drinks, snacks, meals and candies. Sure, feel free to think about promotions and raises but that candy by no means is going save your life so JUMP!!

But apparently this isn't about cost cutting.

There are always layoffs. So, we should never think of raises and promotions?

Cisco needs to retrain (good) people in prosperous BUs.
