first line managers are focussed on individual component bug counts, and on mean time to fix.

most of them do not understand or care about overall quality in customer hands and what it takes to get there. many of them came to cisco directly as managers and have not committed one ddts or wrote a design.

I have seen even developers/testers who became managers "turn" and reach that zombie state of caring only about numbers and bullying people.

Metrics versus worldwide bad press regarding product security issues. Decisions, decisions...

Hey as long as managers have "metrics" then all must be good!

@WndXKS8-1pgh, there are metrics to demonstrate the R&S software quality has been significantly improved with fewer CFD, higher customer satisfaction, and increased revenue.

it just shows, contrary to thoughts that bgl is enjoying life "stealing" murican sjc jobs, everyone is suffering barring a few rodents here and there.

the bgl managers who did not like the site being used as a bugfixing workshop have been silenced or eased out. the rest do not want to apply their minds/higher education and are happy to run bug scrubbers, pointless meetings, and +1 email chains. the lack of any ethical review system has given them the whip and they can use it as needed on the worker bees....while deftly dodging the the whips of the directors themselves. and so on up the tiers.

I guess its hurtling toward a point where csco may not wish to bear even the bgl bill anymore , and red badge a lot of the sprawling campus to tech mahindra, infosys, wipro to run as they see fit - which would mean less carrots and a longer whip.

diversity and overlap of platforms will surely be reduced going forward. even now, I see so much overlap between competing SVP empires. whaetever comes up going forward will likely be given to smaller and better managed teams outside of bgl.

spending a lot of time in csco bgl is greeted with a lot of skepticism when interviewing outside - not sure if thats the case for sjc veterans too in faang type deep interviews.

I can say with certainty from routing side of R&S that quality of teams and delivered code has degraded in SJC also. often the idea is meet some stretch goal timeline with POC grade code, commit asap, leave behind no proper documents for maintainers to read and the "gods" then move to next project/decamp for FAANG leaving whoever maintains it with half-knowledge, struggling to cope when its really tested in later releases and deployments. a recorded "TOI" of 1 hr is thrown to bangalore team.

a few years of this half-knowledge bugfixing makes it more unmanageable. even the 1st and 2nd gen maintainers move on and knowledge*0.5 on each "transition"

nobody seems to value quality code and documentation anymore in a old-school way.
