Sears and Kmart are 500 stores with supply chain infrastructure designed to support 3,500 stores. It'd cost more to separate them than to keep them running.
Possible? - Yes, if the 2 brands were sold off separately. Will it happen? Probably not. Both Brands are badly damaged and have little value.

Years ago? Maybe. Now Kmart is shrunk down so small, it will be Target and Walmart fighting over the most profitable carcasses.
