Cashierless stores - doing more harm than good

Read that Amazon is considering the possibility to introduce the concept of cashierless stores to Whole Foods, similar to the one that it’s testing in AmazonGo stores. This strikes me as a catastrophic move, and not just in terms of the dangers of introducing this concept to stores with larger footprints, or the fact that people are going to lose their jobs due to Automation, which is more or less implied by the technology itself. The whole concept of Whole Foods is based on customer experience and the contact between the employees an customers. If that is taken away, what’s left is a regular grocery store, and if they wanted that, they could have done it a long time ago.

Quiet, chicken little. Believing there's any chance of that happening is as ignorant as believing Whole Foods stores are going to be turned into Amazon stores.

in norcal region they just have cutomers wait on them and call for store support but when other teams need help there is none !

so happy it’s happening!

these guys are none product teams and very consistently theybget promoted to fatl’s or astl’s and that’s how you get mediocre leadership!

my astl has survived by the stl protecting her and turning a blind eye after my tl reported her having a s-xual relation with the atl.

I wonder who will count inventory? Or work the holiday table? Or deal with irate customers? Or scan the shortwalk? Or collect carts? Or process returns? Or keep the cafe clean? Or be there to hire when the other teams get short staffed? Or get pulled for any job that the store needs at a moments notice? Or the other million things the Store Support Team does these days. I guess they’ll figure it out.

a cashier job is demeaning.

all of them in norcallook at clip boards while phones ring and have customers waiting and the biggest thing is our store leadership is totally clueless and talk about things like i saw your team member doing hold them accountable but don’t tell them i told you.

then you report something concerning their astl’s and they point you out like a sore thumb!

We'll prepackage produce and bulk items before any cashierless program can be implemented. And correct stickering issues in all depts that use the bizerba scales. It's gonna be a minute before anything happens. Can you imagine our pampered guests trying to use self check outs? They would have to bag their own groceries AND carry them out to their own cars...we'd have to station a cashier at every self check out to help folks check out.

The last time I was in WFM the cashier was incredibly rude. The attitude of the cashiers has changed since take over by Amazon. I would prefer to check myself out then get the “conversation isn’t necessary “ response I got from the young woman checking me out. Her presence isn’t necessary, I can check myself out faster.

Our store is insanely slow in the morning with many cashiers standing around, but in the afternoon our lines are always long with many p-ss-d-off customers waiting in a line of 10 or more people to buy 2 or 3 items. We have definitely lost customers who just ditch their lunch near the line and leave.

get rid if them .

they can’t check fast enough and waste time talking to each other.

the leadership team has customers waiting while they socialize and look at schedules.

Agree with pmu... What experience? Have you been to a Whole Foods lately?

I like the Whole Foods experience in the aisles. I especially like the bakery. I don’t need a human cashier though. Automating that is actually an improvement.

How about draining the florida swamp of all the d--ggies? Start with the so-called leadership in the south Florida stores? Shouldn't healthy employees be helping our customers?

this isn't an if, but a when. we can jabber-jaw about guest service and all that noise, but its very clear those values went out the window before Amazon came in.

Why is this catastrophic? If it results in lower prices, more people will get access to healthier foods, which results in a healthier society. Whole Foods has a lot of fat and we all know it. There's a reason everyone calls it whole paycheck. The time Amazon takes over and brings it into the 21st century is long overdue.
