Unemployment after being laid off

Since people often ask here about collecting unemployment after being laid off, I thought I'd post this handy article I ran into. I hope somebody finds it useful.

I was IRIF in August and my whole group (we still get together) was declined for NY Unemployment until our severance ran it's course in mid December.

This is in response to dxu regarding unemployment in New York State. I too was laid off in August. Rolling over a pension was not one of the questions asked. What WAS asked was the amount of severance and what time period it covered. For me it was 12 weeks. So, my initial application was denied. I will apply again once I can honestly say "yes, I was capable of working the prior week and have no severance".

I was IRIFd in August with a 12 week severance. I applied in Sept. for unemployment and started collecting after a one week waiting period. One important factor to consider is how you take your pension. I had already rolled mine over to an outside IRA and was not withdrawing any. I think that made a difference. This was in New York State

Im not sure what all the fuss is about unemployment. I was laid off from Kodak in 2010, and had no problem. We had a 3 week/year severance package and it wasnt an issue. Just be prepared, because it is only a faction of your original pay.

Unemployment- benefits does a great job at selling itself "Bring in that money no problem" When it comes to you collecting some of what was put in for you over he years "handing it back out". It's very similar to When rain lands in a bucket full holes very little stays in one place similar to a lot other rainy day funds in place today.
