Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

Contract employees are not safe either

In case people thought only salaried employees were affected...

This is part of the company’s plan to reduce its North American salaried contract and salaried workforce by 15 percent.

The role of a contractor is to act as temporary, supplemental workforce to augment staffing levels when there is a gap. Obviously, when there is a workforce reduction these contractors are the first to go. The contractors understand these risks when they accept the position and they are compensated for it. A company such as GM will typically pay the sponsoring company $90/hr to $125/hr per contractor. Obviously the contractor themselves does not receive that full amount of money, but they do walk away with a hefty hourly wage.

Most contractors have already been notified their employment with GM has been terminated. There are likely some areas of the company where contractors will remain beyond the end of 2018. Some of these individuals will simply be asked to leave at the end of their existing contract.

"Hahaha! Bye, bye, contractors! Thank goodness!"

That's a relatively disgusting thing to wish upon anyone, almost subhuman with complete lack of empathy. No one should wish anyone to lose their job, ranging from a janitor to upwards to an executive. Sure one can weather the storm a little better, but no one should cheer a job elimination.

At the end of the day, if you support job cuts, it says your pro-mega corporate capitalism, and a traitor to your everyday friends and persons, whom are most likely just like you - trying to put food on the table and send their kids to college. I wouldn't want to be in that camp that thinks they're better than another, as karma has one hell of a way of coming back on people.

They are always the fist to go.

They also collect a certain pay premium because of this.

So, they bear risk.

They know it, GM knows it, and it's a contract with both parties happy

This is why I never take a contractor position at any mega corporation.
