The future is no cashiers the new store in Dallas proves that. It will be all self checkout and scan and go and yea its prob a smart business move. Unbelievable how many cashiers call in everyday.
Company has made it so easy for worthless associates to call in and they take advantage of it greatly.
Replacing many registers with SCO and cashier/runner combo is whats slowly being rolled out company wide. I wouldn't expect to see any cashier layoffs though. Most clubs front ends are understaffed as it is and you still need SCO hosts and two associates per open register.
The Mis-Managers at the HO probably know but aren't telling. If you were one of the people at a store or department being let go and you knew, would you stick around? Some would. Some wouldn't.
A few months ago, my club replaced half of the check outs with self checkouts. The remaining checkouts appear to have 2 employees working them. One to move items in the cart, the other to scan and ring up the purchases. I've also seen the scan and go app being promoted a lot as well.

Geeze just wait it out. Nobody is going to know specifics like that on here. If you're curious about changes just check on here from time to time. You'll see some things that come true. That's it. No crystal ball here. Don't be so paranoid about a cashier position. You can find that job anywhere.
