Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

When will White collar workers go?

Are they going to do it before or after the holidays? How many are expected to go?

Even with all the advanced warning, there are still many engineers who seem to be on constant coffee break just hanging out and conversing about layoffs. Meanwhile, they don't value their jobs, or seemingly their futures. What a joke, especially if these same buffoons are selected to remain on their cushy, unproductive jobs!

Both points of view are valid. It all depends on which group you are in. There are hard working productive employees. There are entitled employees who do nothing or worse yet sabotage others.

There are people punching the clock and doing the minimum to avoid dismissal. There are people who carry all the loafers weight without complaint.

If the commenters are truly GM employees and do not know this , they have their heads in the sand.

Maybe Mary has a method to distinguish between the two groups, but at her level it is highly unlikely.

I fully expect some great people to get the axe, and undeserving people to be retained. I fully expect to get the axe because I am highly compensated and have some grey hair. In a way it will be a blessing, the 80 hour work weeks (while getting paid for 40) are getting old. Since many of my coworkers haven’t bothered to learn how to do their job, it will be interesting to watch.

My spouse works for Fords, so we will have a double whammy.

We are treating this as an opportunity. We are relocating. Spending Xmas getting house ready to sell.

Good luck to all. Remember if you are still standing after the axe has fallen, another axe will fall - so make sure you prepare yourself for the fall. Decide now if you want to spend your career at a GM, if not make a plan to exit and exit on your terms.

Rumor has it no White Collar layoffs will occur before the end of the year, with most happening in the middle of January (i.e. the week of January 14th).

The last few comments are actually quite an embarrassment, as you can see quite openly they aren't GM related, or have a very adolescent view on the company. The reality is most people that earn a position within GM, are actually very hard workers. In my many years there, I've seen very few slackers. If you had worked there, you would know it's simply not true in any way.

Now, that's not to say I endorse this company in any way, but let truth lay where it may, and again, let truth lay where it may. I don't purchase this company's product, and I never will. I've been through far too much to know better. I am simply a mercenary for hire, in an equal talent for wage exchange. Furthermore, it's unfair to allow people to bad mouth hard working people that simply want to put food on the table and send their kids to college. I am very pro colleague, not pro company.

For the salaried dismissal, we expect anywhere from the end of year, to mid January. For contractors, it was a complete ambush. End Friday, don't come back Monday. Completely unprofessional, and NOT professional grade as GM would have you believe they are. To get to the salaried, they first have to go through contract. Expect salaried dismissals to be very significant, as it's a strategic ploy to get to them. It's a one time deal, and housekeeping has to work. Recall, in 2015, GM bloated it's salaried numbers by 40%, so its fair to say that upwards of 40% may be reduced. Again, this is a one time deal, so they will swing for the fences. The rule is that for every collection of salaried, 20% exist as contract. If they are eliminating most contract, they will certainly get the numbers they require for salaried.

It will occur ongoing, but will be settled by the quarter following the new year. Good luck to all. You will now understand how contract feel on a yearly basis. Stand together, and not alone. Salaried, contract, union, you aren't all that much different from one another. Recognize it.

You have to realize that their are plenty of non-productive, big mouth engineers who do nothing but try to put on a show of attention for corporate big wigs. Essentially, they dream of becoming a high level manager or exec on day and be just like them! They should be cut off at the knee caps right now for not contributing and just using and abusing the system!

8:00am this morning. It's Friday and a great day for a layoff. It will be interesting to see how the arse kissers keep there jobs after this cut. So many levels of management, so many employees that do absolutely nothing. Call in the consultants from Office Space and interview these folks about what they actually do in the jobs.

Plenty of deadwood engineers need to go. In fact probably more deadwood than is in the plan that will actually be staying.

I've heard that they are planning to let go of who they need to let go of by the end of the year.
