Thread regarding IBM layoffs

CNBC Excerpts: CNBC's Becky Quick Live Interviews from the Business Roundtable CEO Innovation Summit Today

Ginni Rometty on IBM:

And you look at is it always about growth as we've looked at our business. We both transitioned mission

critical work past to future and to the cloud. And so really our role is about being a high value company

but doing things that are both today's current mission critical work, as you and I have always talked

about, and transitioning clients to the future. And I think we've have placed our bets in the right ways.

And you have seen us make progress. As you saw us return to growth, you saw our margins return

after we made all of these investments. And so I think we now need to show that, and continue to

consistently perform.

What reality altering pills is she taking because I want some!

Nobody saw this, including her:

And you have seen us make progress. As you saw us return to growth

You cannot see something that does not exist. You can imagine it, which is what she's doing, but you cannot see it with eyes open (which is required in order to be able to see anything).

1yqu. You have hit the nail on the head. I suspect Ginni will announce the new CEO at the annual stock holders meeting in April. They will co-CEO for approx 6 months while the Ginni downsizing / sell off finishes up. The New CEO will then decide what the “new” IBM will look like. There will be some shuffling as the new CEO realizes what they have. Most likely there will be a reorg into the new CEO’s vision of IBM towards the end of 2019. (perhaps Oct). All new CEO’s get a swing of the bat since they have to live with the new org. Ginni will have right sized the company, so it will not be a reorg like Gerstner, but there will definitely be some moving of deck chairs. Once the reorg is done (figure end of 2019) then the new CEO will get approx 24-36 months to implement their strategy. I would say they would get longer, but the cash flows of the “new” IBM do not support longer than a 24 - 36 month time horizon. So YES get ready for some change, as Ginni has waited far too long, and IBM has to transition. REMEMBER this. IBM never leads, but rather reacts. IBM is definitely in react mode, and that usually means someone who is considered a leader is going to get killed. Now take IBM’s purchase of Redhat, and consider who their intended target is.

Rometty is gone, she is just here for another 6-12 months to transition the company to the Red Hat CEO. She is just going to do the dirty clean up work to get the company ready for hopefully a better future. The clean up is going to be ugly... the company is going to be severely downsized.
