I don't have scientific evidence but this cant be true. Most layoffs are older people and all new hires are younger.

They probably noticed the age of IBM differed from that of the median working population and they needed to take steps to reduce discrimination against younger workers

According to the article, IBM stated: “In fact, since 2010 there is no difference in the age of our U.S. workforce, but the skills profile of our employees has changed dramatically due to our heavy investments in skills and retraining.”

IBM should be asked to prove this assertion. They should provide the median ages of a non-executive US employee on Dec 31, 2010 and on Dec 31, 2017. This data is easily obtainable from employee records. Let's compare the two numbers. If what these lawsuits are claiming is correct, the median fell noticeably between 2010 and 2017.
