Today I Cried For Chevron HES

Today, I cried. I have been with Chevron nearly 15 years. I am a single woman living in [location deleted by moderator] putting in all of my dues following all the rules and building all the experience I am told I need to be the HES Sponsor. Foolishly, I thought the HES world was going to change. A new VP coming in with strong ideas that was going to make a change. I read the announcement the other day stating that an individual with none of the experience that I was told you need has gotten the job. The new VP’s first big appointment is just another good old boy with none of the needed experience. I am heartbroken. Today, I cried for all of us qualified women.

The post was most certainly not trying to disparage anyone who is educated. Education serves many well. And the effort given to achieve the degree is respectable. It was aimed at those who are over confident and arrogant simply becuase they are educated. If you are not such a person, than the aim of the post has nothing to do with you. I was not speculating about degreed professionals as a whole, but rather drawing from personal experience after 20 years in the industry. I also did not ridicule anyone; I think you read way more into the post than was there. Education does not wholly predict success; meaning its not the determining factor alone. I did not insult anyone but rather suggested that there are competent people without degrees and some well educated in-experienced employees could do with some humility when working with experienced non-degreed personnel. But I suppose people glean what they wish. Yadda Yadda.

I am often amazed at the over confidence and arrogance of those who feel better than others; just remember that achievement, accomplishment, productiviity, competency. knowledge and ability are not dependent on a college education. Seriously, there is a path toward achievement and it is not wholly based on a degree. A bit of realism and humility may be in order.

Seems to me long term we should require new DnC and HES staff to have at least a two-year degree. It is shocking some of the low levels of education across these disciplines.

Hey @nlni (aka Lightninh) — Have you forgotten about Free Speech. It’s the 1st Amendment to the US Constitution. As long as anyone is not making threats, defaming a person without certainty, and a handful of other unprotected speech categories, they are free to insult even the Chevron CEO. I do encourage intelligent and professional exchange on this site, but anyone on this anonymous is within their rightful freedom to hurl insults if it makes their day.

This is one HES-terical forum. This is why nobody takes HES seriously, always whining and b!thing about not getting the job that you wanted or afraid of getting ROMd. You should be afraid you good for nothing pre Madonna's, most of which have never worked for a service company or rig contractor. Trying breaking a sweat for once in your good for nothing lives. I would be embarrassed to have to lead this organization. I suggest the VP ROM you guys super hard, right in the butt!

Anyone who gives names on a so called “anonymous” thread and/or posting board is a complete id--t. Likewise, anyone who tries to trash executives and our senior personnel on this thread is Foolish. First off you should have more professionalism; secondly if you want to contribute, actually try to do so rather than slinging sh-- like a suburban primate (zoo aminal). And lastly if you think this is truly anonymous you are also sadly mistaken.

it’s 2019 people and this is a low security public forum. do you think A multibillion dollar international Corporation has no available resources which can be aimed at tracing back the posts to their origin . I knew some guys in D&C who went to give honest feedback to management in order to improve the lack of discipline and fairness from management. There were no repercussions until the downturn came, then they were mysteriously laid off because "they just couldn't be placed". It had nothing to do with the fact that they challenged managements unethical behavior (totally sarcastic). Don't trust payne, he's promote nepotism.

I think you mean US & Canada Operations, but yeah i heard the same from from my manager this morning as well, but it will not be announced officially, for a few months. Too bad, just when things seemed like they were getting back to normal.

I just heard from an Upstream Advisor in San Ramon, that Corporate HES plans on bringing in BCG for a 6-month study to "right-size & simplify" our HES org capability across the value chain (Upstream, Midstream, & Downstream - CNAEP Operations only) based on our current & projected business plan for the next 3 years. Some jobs will be eliminated in some areas where we plan to downscale & eventually divest, but jobs will be opening in other areas to supplement, mostly field based.

Supposedly they are going to try some job-swapping scheme where folks in HES will do Ops and D&C jobs for 3 months and vice-versa. Should be fun and interesting.

@gzoq, Call me a sceptic or just cynical, but I’ve been around for 29 years, and when new leadership comes in with plans to change things for the better, their intentions are usually genuine. But not long after they are in, no real change takes place. Everyone becomes complacent. You’ll soon get the same ole same ole.

Sorry, you neutered what started out as a good post when you played “a card.” Many of us came up through challenging times, myself included. Sometimes I got jobs I thought I did deserve, sometimes I got jobs I maybe wasn’t the best candidate, somtimes did not get jobs that I was the best candidate for (in my estimation of course), in all cases, my reaction was the same, I went to work the next day, and did my job, to the best of my ability. In these situations all tears do is wash away whatever credibility the crier has.

I agree. I do think think this org review is going to bring good change. I am hoping fresh leadership with new ideas that understand the BUs.

I have given up on the PDC and ranking. It is all corrupt and you always see the well liked get the promotions and the 2+s and 1s. If the HES PDC and ranking change to be open and honest, there will be nirvana.

Do not call the hotline. I have done it once before and I was indirectly punished by my manager. Just take it or move on to another company. You can not make a difference here or on the hotline. It is sad but once you are in a position of authority at Chevron, no matter how bad the situation, Chevron will say they fixed and sent the manager to a training class or assigned a coach to help them manage people. It should not be this way.

Sounds like you cried for yourself, not for Chevron HES.

As others pointed out, being a “protected” class won’t get you a leg up at the end of the day. You have to learn how to play to game. I too am a minority, a highly qualified one. Early on, I realized that was never enough. I made every attempt to join happy hours, social events, fishing trips, with the people in positions to influence your career.

The results are I’m a mid level manager now after 10 years in the career and the future prospects still look promising.

I never saw myself as different. You gotta demonstrate that you are equal in every way not mope that they don’t treat you as a equal because you have the right qualifications. Personality and attitude goes a long way. I never pretended to know everything, I just expanded my network to know who could help me get it done.

Never too late to turn it around. Stay positive and go mingle.

I can’t believe people can be so against equal rights for womenfolk. It’s time to move with the times and provide women with equal opportunity to advance. The judiciary used a system called equal merit provision to select people to become judges from under-represented groups such, e.g. gender or ethnicity. It’s a positive stance whereby if it doesn’t change naturally then they’ll make it happen.

well I did not cry when women were appointed to all sorts of VP and like positions even though these women were not the most qualified! Chevron has a CEO who has ensured women were appointed to all sorts of current and newly created leadership positions even though they are not the most qualified. you have a lot of other female competition, and believe it or not male competition. Good luck but my advice to you is to quit.
