Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

Just the facts, and please build that wall!

Let's start with why we need to build the wall-- to stop the exportation of BNY Mellon jobs overseas! We have shipped thousands of jobs to India and now we are going to expand that further and focus more on Poland. These layoffs are part of the company's strategic initiative of "doing more with less," which means we pay less for people in India and Poland so we can reduce expenses by moving jobs there. However, it doesn't work. There are language, culture and time differences that make supporting US laws and business practices very difficult. There are all sorts of special labor laws in Poland that would shock Americans, and limit productivity. At some point, Charlie will find this out (unless he already knows and doesn't care), but it will be too late as all of the institutional knowledge will have been sufficiently purged. The sudden manner of these layoffs provide no opportunity for transition planning or execution.

Now the facts: Bit by bit the company has taken steps to reduce cost and hamstring remaining employees/managers. It has essentially eliminated based at home work arrangements and is discouraging work from home arrangements, despite the benefits to both employer and employee (less commute time and more work time, better work/life balance means happier there is an ironic dichotomy that you can't do the job from home, but you can do it in a foreign country. Here's hoping that the banking regulators take notice and shut this export down due to the safety and soundness risks.

In 2018, managers were "forced" to assign below expectations/unsatisfactory performance ratings to 10% of personnel. If you had 10 people all of who performed well, you still had to ding one, even if your worst-performing employee was better than 20 other people in another area (maybe there was some leveling in large groups, but it actually worked against good managers and in favor of bad managers because if you did eliminate or manage out bad performers, you didn't get credit for it).

In 2Q of 2018, Charlie consolidated everyone into one NYC headquarters (and is in process of consolidating in Pgh) with open space concept under the half-truth guise of collaboration, when it is really to save more money, despite numerous reports that open space has opposite effect, including today's fast company article: https://apple.news/APuDpK74vStGUR76I-ZHg2A

in 3Q of 2018, managers were "forced" to sign a one-sided agreement requiring anywhere from 30 to 90 days notice of departure or retirement (yet the company could terminate managers at any time for any reason before or during that period) if they want to get their bonus (no promise of amount or actual delivery as "employment at will" means employee is entirely at mercy of employer who can change rules if and when it desires). This locks in managers for what is to come next.

In 1Q of 2019, the layoffs begin. Managers are now "stuck" in a no-win situation. Remaining employees bear the worst as they have to pick up slack on top of existing workload. Everyone who wasn't impacted before knows someone let go due to the magnitude (note that the quarterly earnings report stopped reporting # of employees sometime in 2018--this had to be purposeful omission).

What's next? Charlie wants to reduce spans and layers, meaning reducing levels of management, which means more firing of managers or "demotions" to non-managing roles or collapsing of groups. So surviving managers get more responsibility, and others get demoralized or canned. Rumors of things in the offing include reducing severance (remember, no company owes you anything so it can decide 2 weeks per year is too generous), which will save more money on the next round of layoffs. Stay tuned for the annual proxy when we learn how many millions of dollars our CEO and top 5 paid execs get!! Meanwhile let the rest of them eat cake!!

On the bright side, BNY Mellon stock went up almost $1/share (2%) on Jan 15. I guess the Street is approving of the direction Charlie is taking. Poor Alexander Hamilton, Thomas Mellon and sons must be rolling in their graves at how their grand institutions have been wh--ed out for profiteering.

Yep, was very surprised to see that many cuts in India. Maybe the Philippines is cheaper now?

If they are cutting to 35k, whoa that is a lot. That seems overestimated, thats like 1/3 the staff isnt it?. As to backfilling the people let go, they just dont care. Last time I was laid off, two of us were doing the work of 3 people, then there was one left to do work of 3, and we had different duties, so he had to learn what i was doing in addition to keeping up his own work. S--- it up and work harder, b--ches.

Please do not spread messages as if they are outsourcing all jobs to India. Huge lay offs are happening in India. Lot of tenured staffs are removed. As everyone knows, the salary paid to staffs in India are much lower. Still they feel even that is too much of an amount, and therefore laying off a large number of existing staff and a few new contractors are hired for a much cheaper cheaper labour. A few seniors are left behind to train the new ones and once the new hires are trained enough, now again targeting the remaining tenured staff. This is not the right way a company is supposed to work. Everyone is just waiting to hear who is going to be chopped next and when. Keeping the employees in this kind of mental trauma should be considered as a crime. Charlie and Bridgette, nice way of shattering so many families!

From what I hear no one knows they are on the layoff list until you get a call in the morning of it happening. Not a good way to run a business, several of my colleges are now looking for jobs elsewhere as there is no more trust.

Your manager wont know if your on a list, or he cannot tell you. I know the people who are being fired are not aware. Had meetings planned with key people who are no longer working here. Biggest bank in the world run like a mom an pop shop.

Very well said. I would add that if you have been in your position for years without promotion, and you are over 40. And you have been told you are now below expectations, Look for them to hire younger in the next coming months to turn over your position. The moral and stress at bnm grs is horrible. Most are hoping to get the package and just get it over with. Its so sad. One more item I would like to add. This company made huge profits last year. Billions last year. This is greed in its puriest form. Good luck to us all where ever we end up after we are let go.....

Hundreds were laid off in India last year in October and more will be in the coming week. Please don't make projections about jobs going to India. In fact, a lot of technology sector jobs are being moved to the USA. Charlie had clearly mentioned his intention to cut BNYM's global number since he took office. The number will stabilize at somewhere around the 30-35k mark globally.

Sorry to break this news to you but big layoff are going to happen in India soon, probably next week. So a wall is useless since the engine has problems.

It's the sad reality. Adding to it, ones job is now on the mercy of their Management and higher ups, which leads to higher bureaucracy. You do not have any right to have an opinion, just keep your mouth shut and do what's asked "So more with Less" else your job is gone. And no validation or questions will be asked as to why this person. The board is more concerned about the number of employees being reduced and not who is being removed.

And India is not spared, Charlie in one of his townhall last year said that he is concerned about the no. roles exist in India and he wants to bring it down. We have see close to 200 employees losing their jobs in the last couple of months and around the same number is in pipeline for Jan'19. Thanks to so called Spans and Layers and doing more with less.

Omitted letters are O & R in case it isn't obvious which "profanity" was censored (in some states it is a legitimate occupation).
