Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

Tenure is not an entitlement

I see the sentiment oft repeated on this board of how I've been with the company so long and the world owes me something. Just Wow. It's 2019. Then there was that post complaining about how cutting costs, and seeking margins and profits was endemic to financial services companies that got a whole lot of upvotes. What do you people think we do? I can see now that BNY Mellon really needed an enema and probably a few more to clear out this kind the kind of folk who think this is an entitlement that is somehow owed to them just because they've been sitting on their butts for 20+ years.

The best revenge is served cold. Let's all show up at the annual stockholders meeting - anyone who owns just 1 share of stock can appear at the meeting, you can also ask questions. Let's pepper the board with as many questions as they can answer. I'll bring my popcorn......

Next year, we'll submit proxy questions...........

No, it's not Charlie, it's CJ - Charlie's coffee and shoe shine boy. Couldn't get a job in the real world, so I can over to make photocopies, bring coffee and shine shoes to the folks on 15.

Is a review that doesn't involve a visibly embarrassed supervisor who was forced to rate you "Below Expectations" even though you met or exceeded all your goals an entitlement?

Look, everyone understands layoffs and right sizing, but this business of distributed ratings and forcing managers to misrepresent performance is straight-up b.s.

Wonder if this is the transcript that Charlie has prepared for Thursday's all hands call. Sounds like sentiment Charlie would use. Interested to hear more of your thoughts about employees on Thursday Charlie. TTYL.

If you were informed vs biased you'd know BK is split into Investment Services and Investment Management. Investment Management is made up of 22 separate and distinct business with no clear offering to the market place. IM is a highly expensive business that has underperformed for since the 2007 merger. The executive committee has been offsetting extreme loses in IM through cuts to the IS business - historically low wages, cost cutting initiatives, product elimination, reducing capital investment for remaining products. I wouldn't blame people who worked under those conditions for the dereliction of duty by ExCo to effectively manage the IM business vs killing a profitable IS business. Any astute stockholder is and has been clearly seeing this for years and moreso under the current hired management. That's why the stock price is so low and has remained so for many years.

This is either a snot-nosed kid who thinks he's gods gift, or its Charlie. Remember kid, you'll be in your 50's someday too. Good luck with that.

So if we give our best to the company, show up every day, do a good job, get positive reviews, get a meager cost of living 2% every year, eventually get promoted to more responsibilities, we should expect to be let go just because we cost more money? At a time when we're looked at as being less desirable than a 20 something with no experience? That's awesome.

I'd rather you come to me and say, look you're doing a good job here, but you're getting near the top of your salary range, we need to freeze your pay increases for a year or two to pull you back down to the middle. The company gets to keep my experience (training new employees costs money) and I get to decide if that is an accurate assessment of my worth, and if not, I'll look elsewhere.

Dumping a bunch of people in their mid-50's who are still contributing, just because they've earned too much seniority is b---s---. You're punishing people for their loyalty. And you wonder why employees have no f---s left to give their employers anymore.

Wow. I really don't think those of us with a lot of years in really feel "entitled" as you say. I will just leave my comment at that and say again WOW.

Ok Charlie, so last year I got an exceeded expected level rating and now this year I get a below expected level rating with not one bad thing mentioned. My direct Manager left in Dec saying they didn't want to be apart of what was coming and my next level Manager retired in December. So the person bringing down the axe was someone I hadn't even had a meeting with previously. This isn't cutting slackers, this is cutting staff regardless of performance to make the bottom line look a little better for a few days until the whole place crumbles.
