Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

Working OT while Union brothers are being furloughed?

What are the rules of this? Are we suppose to stand as Union employees and not work OT while there are currently people being cut? Is it wrong? Are we suppose to?

Typical union response "it shows a need for more people" b---s--- it shows the company can just force people to work 12 hours. Of course this doesn't matter to the higher up guys who don't have to work 12 hour days 5 days a week.

It does nothing to deny working overtime. I absolutely understand the point of view for not wanting it to. E allowed and the benefits or not accepting it. But in my opinion the more overtime we work, the more it will show the need for more workers. If we continue to get the work all done without help of overtime it will show they really didn’t need to waste money on overtime. Inversely they will add money spent on overtime and it will help tip the scales in favor of calling back a straight time employee instead.

If you try to be one of the guys standing in solidarity with your furloughed brothers, you’ll watch a small group of employees profiting off all the OT being handed out (which is none right now, just talking about hypothetical OT at the moment, but it happened a little after the first round of layoffs). Then you have to wonder if it’s better to take some of the OT so that small group doesn’t get it all.

OT is offered by seniority. Call all available members. If no one takes it, they can force the youngest man on duty to stay to work the hot train and beyond.

Source: youngest man for 3.5 years.
