Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

Special Agent Layoffs

So, Special Agents across the system were told yesterday to come to their office/terminal and wait like sitting ducks to see if their phones rang with a call from Omaha. Firing some Special Agents, then giving other Special Agents the option to move across the country to fill those same positions that you just fired agents out of was spineless/classless. No one is going to up-root their families and move for Union Pacifc. We have been under the constant threat of layoffs for the past 2 years...hell take Union Pacifc’s offer and move across the country,...on a hope/prayer that in another few years you will not be hit again with layoffs. I do not need 24 hours to think about it...No thanks!!! I just hate I worked my a-- off and gave so much time/life to Union Pacifc. I was a Special Agent that got a call. F_CK your moving package...I’ll take that sorry a-- severance package and find another job. At least now I will have a peace of mind. I wouldn’t recommend working at Union Pacifc to ANY law enforcement officer/agency. The atmosphere is TOXIC and a complete SEPTIC 💩💩💩 sh-- tank!!! Good luck to all the Special Agents that didn’t get a call.

That's what the Southern Pacific Railroad Police did to us back in 1993. Gave us a 5 minute notice to turn in your badge and ID card. They laid off officers with 22 years of service, and kept some with 4years on. But it work out better for me. I got hired by the Los Angeles County Police dept. Now I get a retirement check from the County and one from the Railroad.

Hey @XBamn4n-2xnk and your rentacop statement. You’re funny. Hope you don’t injure your fingers on your keyboard or get a paper cut. Oh yeah hope your thermostat don’t break down in your office, imagine the horrors you face. Cubicle nightmares and all.

I came here after retiring with a full career from a Bay Area Department. At my old department everything was pro Officer and employee. Total support. Bay Area Departments pay way higher than UP due to cost of living, but I liked trains and the freedom of UPPD as a retirement job. Couldn't believe how many free hours I had to give the railroad because of short staffing. Stuck around because of the great Agents I worked with. Got the layoff call. Told I couldn't go to my office and clear out my desk. Told I wasn't allowed on UP property. I am an Honorably retired California Police Officer and UP made me feel like someone they fired for theft. Really weird interaction with HR and Command Staff. Time for the Feds to take over policing the rail roads in my opinion.

Special Agents tend to have years of experience with a "real" police force. They provide valuable service protecting the public, UP assets AND employees. So give them the respect they deserve!

Nothing personal but being a wannabe cop is nonessential to the job we do. The hobos who may ride trains and vandalize equipment doesn’t warrant the amount of money the company spends for rent a cops.

I left UPRRPD 3+ years ago and eventually got back on with a “real“ police department. Do I make less money? Yes! But when my shift is through I sleep without grinding my teeth and RMCC doesn’t wake me to update me about the trespasser the locals couldn’t find. My advice is to get out while you can, while your certification and reputation as a “real” cop are intact, then don’t look back!

Here's the deal boys and girls, and you better listen up. If you're not actively trying to leave this complete joke of a so-called "police department" then you're all going to end up in the same boat sooner rather than later. And believe me, there will be no severance package to hold you over until you find another job. There will be no private railroad police departments in the very near future. It's a fact. The U.S. and state governments are questioning it, the national police and sheriff's unions are questioning it, the public is questioning it, and the companies are questioning it. There's just too much risk, and not enough government oversight involved. The days of this job being the best kept secret in law enforcement are over. Period. Don't listen to these clowns in Oma-hell that try to tell you that "all is well" because it's not. Do yourself a favor and get out now before you find yourself unemployed. It's coming so you better have the "Courage to Care" about your family before you're shown the "UP Way" out the door!

The public should read Dipley v Union Pacific. This is how the Police Department is ran. You are pushed to do immoral and unethical things so you can collect a paycheck. If you don’t go with the program they toss you out with the trash. Cut throat with no care for the one guy walking through transient encampments without the proper equipment or help.

I’m glad I left that place. I urge the guys there to get a local Police Union involved. They would have a field day publicizing Union Pacific lack of regard for their Officers. Everyone who has worked here has enough dirt on the command staff and soon as they see the dirt piling up they punish the troops.

This place is a whistleblower act waiting to happen. I’m glad I’m out, I just feel bad for the fellow officers who have to work by themselves with no backup and bad equipment.

It’s true the police department doesn’t make money for UP so they could care less about it.

I saw our Special Agent out today writing a ticket to a trespasser on the tracks who ran right in fromt of a passing train. Poor guy was all alone in a bad neighborhood dealing with this guy. I watched him for awhile just to be there to help if things went sideways. I talked to him afterwords just to tell him thanks for being out there. He didnt say a word about these layoffs or complain at all. He just told me to call if I ever needed him. Sounds like they were cut pretty hard, I dont think Omaha realizes just what these agents do to protect us and prevent issues for the RR on an everyday basis.

I was a special agent in STL and was laid off in November. Worst phone call I’ve ever received. Better off now with a new PD. UP is a joke. Take the package and forget them.

expected to take the inherent risks, but don’t get hurt because it will reflect on your evaluation. Really a crazy place. Good luck to all.

I agree, I was laid off in November and came back to my original craft, I wouldn’t transfer across the street for Union Pacific !! I’m so thankful that the individuals I encouraged to come to Union Pacific never came and I’ll never encourage anyone to come here again!!!! Good luck to everyone that was let go in whatever form it was!!!
