Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

Returning after accepting severance.

Is there a time limit, accepting severance, that one can not reapply for positions? Done for awhile with this company but, foresee C-level exodus a few years. Would reemployment be possible at some time down the road or am I deemed the undesirable now for the rest of my life because I served well for over a decade?

Not everyone was laid off do to performance issues. I was laid off because I was a year away from being locked into the pension plan. Also I had switched to a different Team and Director 4 months ago on my own accord.

Consider looking outside of Omaha, it that’s where you are located. The job market is hot in some other places right now, and the pay is also higher. Are you willing to take a risk and move? If not, there are also traveling jobs such as consulting where they will fly you out on Monday and back on Thursday night. It might not be ideal, but it’ll pay the bills for now and get you out of the house. It’s easier to find a job when you have one.

Previous post is correct. To be rehired, nonagreement employees need EVP of HR’s approval to come back. So you’d need Beth’s approval.

They cut you for a reason, look in the mirror and be honest with yourself.

Don’t come back, your family will thank you, it’s not what it used to be, it’s getting hard to come back to work each day not knowing if your coworker or you will be around and they keep cutting resources, go back to school if don’t have a degree if you do go to another industry, wish you the best.

Read your severance package. It will say in there whether you're eligible for rehire. Last I checked, the stipulation was that anyone could be rehired if they had the expressed approval of Sherrye Hutcherson. Since Sherrye does not work there anymore, I do not know if the policy still applies. If you really wanted to work there again (which I don't recommend) in 2 to 5 years UP's HR systems won't remember that you were laid off. Through no fault of the employees charged with HR data management, the HR data management systems are sloppy as best. They likely coded you as a quit or "resigned" and people who left voluntarily (resigned) are eligible for rehire, for the most part.

@XCkwSiy-kjs you have to stay strong, get yourself a routine and work on your resume / business plan to build a business. I am out since October and already very depressed. And trying to work on that every day. Work with your transition coaches and see what is out there. We have to stay strong among fellow UP ex-employees.

Thanks guys. Hopefully I will out grow the urge in the future to ever care to look back. Never going to be the same company or souls after they finished anyway. Just hard right now with nothing yet to focus anew on and so many years of service.

Can’t come back if you accept severance.

Although they say you can't work there again they make the rules and can break them too. Reapply in a few years, you have nothing to lose.

If you take a severance you are not eligible for rehire. Might change in the future if they find it difficult to find employees with rail experience.
