Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

Still love my job

I guess I see things differently than a lot of people on here. I'm a female employee and have been there 20 years. UP is an amazing place to work if you are a woman. Work life balance is excellent. Yes we've had layoffs. Most companies are laying off right now. Go to another company though. See if your pay is even close to being the same. We can work from home and wear jeans. There is a free gym on site. Yes, any of us could be laid off today. That's true anywhere. I truly love what I do and the people I work with. You have to want to work if you are at UP. I feel like those who were let go although it's sad, were not really hard workers. At least in our department. My only complaint is that our health insurance is not very good for a company as big as it is. We will see what the future holds. If I loose my job I will be sad but while I'm there I still love UP. I'm proud of what I do. If your not why are you still there?

I have been here 20 years also and have worked all over this railroad. I haven’t seen anyone allowed to work from home. If that job exists it must not be that important.

Ding Bat. It’s amazing how many people think the whole railroad is the the glass palace. Pathetic. Oh ya you have a nice gym there. People who work from home should be the first to loose their jobs.

Most of us enjoyed our jobs and I loved my coworkers. What is disgraceful is how UP has decided to handle the workforce reduction. They’ve treated us all like c-ap for the last 5 years. Never cared to learn what people actually did for work. It was almost a relief Tuesday when they tapped on my shoulder. And yes, we were sent home because of age and YOS. You are on a list, your turn will happen. Hope your resume is up to date.

In the same vein that you say layoffs happen everywhere, so do working single mothers. I’m one and was laid off with kids in college. That’s okay because as a special single mother, I have a masters in IT and found a better job in a few weeks thanks to my network who knew of my strong work ethic and skill set. It sounds like someone else is putting those silly thoughts in your head. Are you dating your boss, by chance?

If so, is there enough room under that rock for both of us.

You are an id--t. You’re most likely on a list, it’s just not your turn....yet. I’m a female (like that matters), 20 year ee, who worked 65 hrs a week. Some of the best workers UP had were walked off property, it had nothing to do with job performance. Just wait your turn, it’ll happen. No one will retire from UP with 30 years - you aren’t special, lady.

Vena would disagree that you are a hard worker, working from home. It has been months, years or decades now, as a 20yr gal, if you have ever, since seeing a working, running Locomotive up close right? We are a railroad. And that makes you the waste, responsible for high operation ratio you self important privileged little snow flake. How dare you condemn others when you clearly have no clue the purpose of a railroad. Of course you love your job, you leach your living from others that do real work necessary to transport the goods and keep the trains always moving. You contribute nothing at all towards that effort. You are exactly who they should lay off. Should have been gone 19.5years ago.

I am real and no I do not work in Corp communications. I also do not live with my head in the clouds about life. Nobody owes us a thing. Nothing is guaranteed. You decide whether you are happy or not. You are in charge of your life. If you are miserable at UP you need to sit down and figure out your future. Like I said I could lose my job on Monday. Would be horrible. I am a single mother. But the comments about how bad it is to work there. Please....hardly. I'm not going to feel bad for not hating my job. Mentally ill? For being happy. Ok? Whatever makes you feel better. I will always appreciate the opportunity I've been given. I feel good about what I do.

The majority of us who have been laid off is NOT based on work ethic. It all goes by seniority. If I had 20 years in, I would love my job too. No one with 20 years is going to be touched. All the hard working people were on the bottom of the seniority list, while the top of the seniority list did the absolute bare minimum. Don’t know where your fairytale land is of “working from home with jeans on.” All of the crafts workers bust their a-- outside in every weather condition possible. Posts like this make me sick. You are out of touch with reality and what the railroad actually does. Go sit behind your computer and look at numbers....id--t.

Ha, ha. Work from home? Jeans? I worked for UP for 10 years at 3 locations including UPC. There were NO jeans days unless schools were closed. Work from home? I knew of one “special” person who was able to do so and I was in IT. Those who were laid off weren’t hard workers? Um, I received 4 promotions and was offered a 5th which I declined. I earned stock awards, bonuses, and “2” ratings. I also worked 60 hours per week as needed to ensure my projects were a success. Why was I laid off? My age and my salary. Oh, and I’m a “woman.”

Are we not doing enough damage control with shill profiles on Glassdoor? Is our strategy now coming for an anonymous job positing board? Ground breaking , I bet HR and Corporate Comm worked on this for two whole weeks!
