Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

Where to apply for a plant job in the greater Detroit region?

I was axed from GM recently. I’m a plant worker and I’m just getting the picture how the job market is tight. GM is going through layoffs, the fact that Ford isn’t laying off in the US certainly doesn’t mean that they’re hiring. As far as I can see other automotive companies aren’t keen on hiring as well. Wanted to try here and try to apply before I decide to try to take my fortunes elsewhere. Any advice?

Will you consider moving?? www.buildyourcareer.com

Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries is hiring.

With the 2 ship buy, they have hired over 11,000 people in 2 years and need thousands more.

Great area, schools , beaches and mountains!

Your first problem is assuming Detroit. To be safe (-er), you must consider moving farther. Yes, it is not convenient or worse. For most, not actually impossible.

The market is difficult. Everyone knows a recession is looming, and one by one these companies are getting their house in order to whether the storm. The strongest of all three automakers appears to be FCA at this current time. It's my opinion to find something, anything to whether the storm that is coming. I know that's easier said than done.

In 2008 I worked with a person that was laid off from a role. He said never again, so he went back to school in the health field. I think it was nursing. I'm fairly sure he's working somewhere today, unafraid of the economic downturns. Probably the best move he ever made.

I have been looking for a job since November and there has been zero interest. It is terrifying. It won't be long before I lose everything that I worked for my whole life. I am not unskilled, but I am not high skilled (think Engineers, true IT skills) and can't even land a job paying $13/hr. Yes, I will resort to fast food or retail in order to make some money as I am not too proud to do any job, but really, that income won't pay basic need bills.

UAW negotiated much bigger wages and benefits at the big 3 so they're all laying off, and the rest of the industry doesn't want Big 3 workers. Better start learning how to ask whether they'd like fries with that.

Get some training with a secure future. A neighbor works for Michigan Works. She says most employers she work with want nothing to do with UAW members

You better start reskilling to something else... No job for laid off people from GM.
