Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

What would you do?

My department lost 40 percent over the last two years. I have 15 years with UP, but have the chance to move onto another corporation that offers a very comprehensive retirement with excellent job security.

To all my fellow UP workers... what would you do? Roll the dice and hope they are done with the cuts, or pack it in and move on to another employer?

Ride it out buddy. You're pretty much committed at this point. If they end up screwing you over...well find another RR job and keep those retirement months rolling. You can do this but it may require some serious courage and fortitude to see it through. Don't give up the fight, you're still in the early rounds yet.

Run - as fast as you can. At 49 they walked me out the door. Just to save $.

Y'all crazy. I love being a carman. I'm gonna stay as long as I can. I have 15 yrs. in. You would be stupid to let it all go. If you're young in your 30's that's a different story, at 49 good luck.

Do whatever is best for YOU and your FAMILY. Don't listen to half of these asshats on here. Apparently some of these people have never had a normal conversation before. Good luck either way.

It’s a roll of the dice. For sure there will be more job reductions in the near future in order to “grow to 55” and all that.

If you have a chance to get out, I would strongly recommend it. You never know when the next cut will be or where.

How many years does it take to be vested?

I would have RRB estimate the retirement $ before I left. If you like the job you have now, that is a good reason to stay. I also do not depend on a company to fund my retirement, I have my own IRA with Vanguard that I setup. Some in stock, bonds , GMNA ,funds etc,,,.

Thanks for your opinions. I’m 49 and my plan was to go until I’m 62 but who knows how that will play... tough choice to walk away from RR retirement.

Don't do it !

After 15 years I transferred to a place I wanted to retire...after 1 year I got laid off and I'm 60 years old.....

Don't make the same mistake I did !
