It's not my fault I got old, and it's not my fault they gave me raises.
I get letting people go for financial reasons, but do they have to humiliate people with "Below Expectations" ratings when those ratings were mandated, and do not reflect performance?
It's just kind of lousy of them.

Newsflash for any kids mocking the layoffs on here: you are not immune, and this can certainly happen to you. I am in my 30s and I was laid off this week. Don't reap what you may not want to later sow.

Horrible toxic hell
It starts at the top. Hopefully the board realizes Charlie is destroying the company. Loyalty and commitment are a thing of the past. Charlie has personally destroyed moral by taking away flexible work arrangements, 10% of staff needs to be rated below expectations to move them out, change bank titles and demoted staff that were managing directors to directors.
Everett office will be shutdown. Stay away!!! Bad career move to come to work here!

Good luck to us all who work for BNY especially those who been there for a number of years and now see how negatively things has changed. Not in my 50's but have dedicated a lot of this time to this company and this is turning out to be a toxic place even if they don't let you go. Hopefully you find a new job doing something you like.

You know its not that us older people are disinterested in improving, but when you get to be an adult, you have to think about work/life balance, you've go a house, kids in college, an older parent to take home, or god forbid, take over their finances and liquidate after they no longer able to,
Your focus shifts, and you think "I've got a good job here, people like me, I'm getting good reviews and a yearly increase, I'm going to focus on being the best I can be here, so I can spend some time on this personal stuff." So maybe you stop looking for new work opportunities or training for a different technology, and put all your efforts into making your position efficient and well taken care of. Doesn't make you stupid. Don't kid yourself that they care about career development, I've been at BNY for 15 years, and no one has ever come to me and said "you know what, you'd be really good at X, why dont you take this class and we'll see if we can get you more responsibilities" - Doesn't happen. I'd love to take training if the company was serious about supporting it. Theyre not. Cheaper for them to hire some dumb kid who already took an assload of web courses and has no experience, because he'll work cheap for the opportunity.
You might say it's my fault, that I should have just kept training on my own, and yeah, when I was young and single with no responsibilities, I did that all the time. Now I have other responsibilities, and there are only so many hours in the day. And training isn't cheap if you're doing it on your own. a pro level class can be $2500. Hard to justify the time and money with no path for career advancement.
Then all of a sudden you're in your mid-fifties and you get sh---canned for no good reason except you cost too much money, and you're an expert on your job, but weak in other areas. Job descriptions are a joke, they ask for ridiculous skills that aren't necessary, and maybe you know something about it, but it wasn't part of your old job, so you aren't a perfect fit, and you dont look "hungry" enough because you aren't trained on this years hot tech.
You go out and you're being interviewed by 20 and 30 somethings, who don't know how smart and detail-oriented you are, or how funny you are at work or that you and your team used to love to hang out together, they just see some old guy who looks like their dad and say "pass". You're panicked every moment of the day thinking you're going to end up working at Home Depot for $10 an hour. You can't sleep and you cant eat, worried about what you're going to do. How are you going to afford health care? Will you have enough to retire? You have to wait till at least 62 for social security, and 65 for Medicare. What are you going to do for the next 10 years?
The privileged Charlies of the world have no idea about what people in real life have to deal with or they'd come up with a way to make their numbers without treating people like disposable widgets. All you kids sh--posting here, this will happen to you. Good luck with that.
