Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

How many will be affected in this round of layoffs?

Of course, I am familiar with the announced numbers of cuts and plant closures but something tells me that this will go beyond those announced numbers and that the final count of cut workers will be bigger. What do you think the numbers will be in reality?

It might be 2600 employees in Austin now, after the 10% layoff GM did in 2018. Yes, they already had a layoff last year, but they didn't announce it. They kept that one pretty quiet. They only announced the 15% 2019 layoff because they were also closing 5 plants and couldn't really hide that level of turmoil.

There are only about 2600 people located in the Austin Innovation Centers.

They never said the white collar layoffs would be 8 thousand people. I've seen that falsely quoted a few times now.

I've heard Austin has 3000 employees. If you assume the layoffs will be 15% or 30%, you can do the math.

Approximately 8,000 full time salaried workers. That is coming from the announcement made back in November. It affects all areas of the company, some more than others.

Layoffs are always difficult but I know the suppliers have been taken a beating for years. While GM employees were getting 10K bonus, the suppliers were getting pushed by GM to lower the price of their parts. GM will push a supplier to the brink of no profit, and does not understand they have an obligation to US suppliers to allow a profit to be made.

All we know outside of that is how many people took the VSP and that Mary said it was below what they needed. Everything else is rumor and speculation at this point. Different groups seem to have been told different criteria for the cuts, and others haven't been told anything at all. I've seen 6,000 employees thrown around but I have never seen that officially announced anywhere other than newspapers, who may just be estimating. Seems like only IT, Engineers, and Marketing are definite.

Per IT center, I'm gonna guess 70-80 people being cut
