Gonna be starting in Austin, TX next month for the NCG program and am wondering what to expect since it seems like a lot of guys/gals in the same program are on here talking. How is the daily life, is WFH frowned upon, and are you required to work on-call shifts?

You should direct your questions to the person listed at the bottom of your offer letter.
My manager tracks every sick day and every vacation day. So my manager knows exactly how much vacation time I have used.
well yes, big companies with large IT go into cost-cutting mode. IBM always does this and targets senior employees pretty hard. Now that GM has insourced IT, it will do the same. This is their first time to go through the process. I'm sure they'll find a way to screw it up.
yeah its kind of disturbing they are hiring during mass layoffs, makes you think it will not be performance based as I was told. They are cutting seniors to hire cheap jr devs
Georgia hired some too. If you are going to ask questions about a company's benefits and work culture you go to Glassdoor or LinkedIn...not a site about layoffs.
They must not have asked difficult questions if they hired you...
You are joining a company that is laying people off, you should think about it, or at least figure out that your time with GM may be short
Kind of in poor taste to post this in a layoff forum
What base salary they are offering you?
From my experience and many other it is totally team dependent. Some WFH some do not. Some managers micro management and other you rarely see. So good luck and hope you get on a good team, and if not you can transfer teams after a year i believe
Of course they're hiring. GM's cost reductions start at the top. That's why several C-suite roles were asked to move on and take the voluntary package. Every project will take a haircut from the top down to level 7s. The more high-salary people you remove, more $$$ remains for new college hires/graduates. It's crazy because NCGs will be given responsibilities they may not be prepared to handle. You pay experienced people decent salaries to tackle complex situations. That responsibility may get passed to a kid just out of school. Be prepared.
@UT-Austin coder
what was your interview like? Did they give you an actual whiteboard interview? If it was behavioral, you're prob. gonna be laid off in another couple of years.
Thanks for the answer. Is it true that PTO is based on an honor system with no specific tracking? Also does the 401k contribution match grow with your raises. I know they say up to 8% match each year but is this based on my starting salary only or does it automatically go up when I get a raise in July?
Really depends on your manager. GM IT/Randy Mott prefers employees to be in the ofice. Being on call will depend on your work function and experience. We are usually on call during the holidays when everyone is out. We have a schedule we come up with amongst our peers.
Austin is getting rid of 100's of devs and we're hiring? WTF!
