Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

Voluntary Departures?

I wonder why GM doesn't have another round of voluntary departures? Why did they limit earlier participation to those with > 12 years? I am > 50 y.o. , a level 7, and have been in GMIT about 6 years, and would be happy to volunteer for leaving -- Why shouldn't they let me leave voluntarily and save the job of a younger, cheaper resource? If they don't lay me off, then my morale is going to be very poor (until I DO finally leave some day). I'm ready for a change, GM should help me out the door! I'm sure I'm not the only person that feels this way.

Address the moral of those who remain? You must be joking ! GM is playing a mind game at the moment with those who remain clearly. They want people to leave under the constant pressure , I was told people are getting angry sitting there day in day out in fear , talk about winning with integrity , what sick BS.

You are entitled to nothing period , maybe salary employees should have unionized , to little to late , GM Owens you.

bc people who have no family, no mortgage etc would jump all over that. They dont want to lose those people are they tend to be younger and cheaper.

Is the opposite, the longer you are at a company the more your salary degrade. College hire comes in at a much higher salary than you.

i feel like they don't want to offer voluntary as it would be the young people who take it as they can easily jump companies

Well if Austin is the hub of IT, i could only assume if would take the biggest IT layoff just out of sheer volume of employees

I expect Warren/Detroit to get hit harder than other innovative centers due to age of workforce and the fact of power base of IT is in Austin. Those not working at innovation centers are at high risk, especially those working at home.

Well you are correct I have never been to Austin, just speaking from my building

If you think 50% of the staff in Austin is over 40, you haven't been to Austin. The staff skews very young. Most people seem to be in their 20s. The Detroit locations skew much older.

The list mentioned will only have job title and age on it.

We are entitled to see the list of those let go when we are, they are supposed to attach it to your papers. Or provide it when you ask.

there is no way 10% of staff is only over 40, i would put it more around 40-50% "I hope there's a class action suit for age discrimination. If people over 40 are 10% of your staff but 50% of those laid off, which seems to be what's happening in Austin"

Many will leave voluntarily, but they won't count towards the layoff.

I just heard of two people leaving voluntarily. One is a retirement and the other hasn’t been here that long. Not sure if details.

Heard from a reliable source that they are clearly targeting older worker regardless of skill or performance.

Survival of the fittest not the youngest!! If you are talented you will find a job no matter what and will

not want the boomers to step down just so you can have a job !!

Instead of this classic boomer mindset of got mine screw everyone please step aside with grace. I see people in their 70s milking the cash cow. Show up just to cash the check. Unable to learn the new way to do things and dip out after lunch.

Let the young people who went to college and want to start their lives have a spot. We just bought a home and are starting our families. The long term economic health relies on a robust middle class. Instead we have to quietly wait until a boomer decides when they want to stop making double what a new college hire to step down and move to Florida and sell their overvalued home to us.

We are living in the world you created and it’s now just starting to bite you in the a--.

I am sitting here on a Sat reading these posts because I am SEVERELY stressed! Not from the possibility of a layoff but my inability to plan for the upcoming year. The company will need to come up with a plan to address the moral of those who remain.

I asked to volunteer for the involuntary separation; they flat out refused. I've been at GM for 5 years.

Age discrimination. They want to get rid of older workers.

Agreed, I think they're aiming for getting rid of higher paid people. They wouldn't want a bunch of underpaid ex college hires to volunteer.

12 years = overpaid in their eyes. They can hire two people to do their job for the same cost, minus the pension too
