I don't see how UP can come back "stronger than ever." UP was doing everything right, and thinking very long-term. It was amazing to work here. Now UP has decided to throw all that away and be just another mediocre railroad. A few activist investors have brought down the best railroad company in North America. It will take decades to recover from all the slashing and burning.
I have interned here for 2.5 years and I loved it when I started. The job was so fulfilling and I was learning so much. After the layoffs hit in 2017 my role as an intern became "do the work of the full-time employees at the same pay in less than 25 hours per week". I would have loved to stay with the company for a full time job if asked in 2016 or early 2017, but not? Not a chance. No college in town recommends students work at UP now. UP cut off donations they made to universities they partner with. Glassdoor's rating of this place has plunged. Don't worry, what the executives have done to this company may not show right now, but come 2021 when finding labor in Omaha becomes a struggle... Well, you know the rest of the story.

oof, don't bash a kid 1 year out of college for regretting it - i'm on year 5 and i feel the same way. you have no idea what he worked to get here. mindset like you is toxic to UP and I hope you leave

I think about leaving every day and I've only been with UP about a year.
Retirement is right around the corner. No real desire to hit the job search again.
