Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

Randy blamed large fixed costs for the reason why IT layoffs will be more substantial... Why isn't he to blame?

If you are in IT, then you already know that Mott is anti-cloud, but why the in the world is laying a ton of people off better than using a public cloud to reduce costs? The amount of waste I've seen, and continue to see in IT for infrastructure, storage, compute, network, hardware, etc blows my mind. They always claim that we can do it cheaper, but does anyone actually believe that? A ton of systems just sit there idle, or barely used all weekend, all night!

How would this not reflect poorly on his leadership and decisions especially as he pointed out that the business shifted and IT hadn't yet?

"...large Fixed Costs"

That is only part of the Story...Is I.T. bringing value? Saving Money? Increasing Efficiency?

Years ago, staffing up this Organization, all this discussion of InSourcing, AND helping to build the Systems for Innovation, building better vehicles and all that goes with it...

Serious innovation and GOOD I.T. Systems don't Cost. They P A Y...

Is I.T. doing this or not? It's not only a cost thing

That's part of why I'm worried

Ahh the joy when someone schools another person on what cloud really is.

You do realize IBM, Microsoft, and Amazon are all using their own internal data warehouse just like GM.

This is how Mott has treated every other company's IT reins. It should not be a surprise to anyone.

Lets get rid of all of those fixed manufacturing costs as well. It's too expensive to let union owned factories build vehicles. We can outsource it to Toyota's Mexican factories for cheap.

Hard to believe you guys are IT and haven’t realized that GM has been moving data off premises. No wonder you guys are getting axes - you’re clueless.

If AWS is good enough for NSA, DIA and DOD why is it not good (secure) enough for GM? No, let's build and maintain it ourselves for 2-3 times the cost. Too much 'fixed costs' on the sheets? No problem let's just lay off 15%-25% of our IT workforce. That will take care of that!! Next, GM will go back to 100% outsourcing, offshore no less. This place is run by dumb--ses!!

Randy Mott is a has-been taint waste who’s failed GM in a spectacular fashion.

You clearly have no idea what you are talking about. It's on par with saying people who drive Corvettes waste so much horsepower that they would be better off riding the city bus.
