Testing for $50?

Just wondering if all locations and departments are having directors and management offer a test for $50 reward? Supposed to gauge intelligence, knowledge. I smell something funny. Especially since at least where im at its getting pushed hard now short of mandatory.

Management in Proviso tried The its mandatory story to some craftsmen. The unions told their members its voluntary many refused in the shop. Which caused management to miss their quota in Proviso.

UNION PACIFIC

Skilled Craft Battery Validation

Union Pacific has engaged Aon Consulting to update the existing Skilled Craft Battery (SCB) test. The test is currently used to select candidates into Engineering, Mechanical, and IT – Telecom craft positions.

The next steps in the SCB update are to pilot the redesigned test and validate its performance.

Test Pilot:

Randomly selected employees will be asked to take part in an online test pilot. Their results on the test pilot will be used to help Union Pacific and Aon complete the updated test design and establish passing standards.

A representative sample of employees across participating crafts has been selected to take part in the pilot. Demographic data will be collected to ensure job positions, gender, age, and races are fairly represented in the sample.

Responses to the test pilot will be recorded by Aon and reported in summary to Union Pacific. Individual performance will not be shared with anyone at Union Pacific, and all test pilot data is confidential. Because this is a pilot there is no true “pass” or “fail” – the employees’ results on the test pilot will help us determine what will be used as passing scores for future job candidates. Participation in the test pilot is voluntary and will not affect employees’ jobs in any way.

Supervisor Work Questionnaire:

At the same time employees are completing the test pilot their supervisors / managers will be asked to take a short work questionnaire that asks about their employee’s work performance. This step in the process provides the best evidence of test validity and helps Aon determine if the updated battery predicts successful job performance.

Supervisor / manager responses to the work questionnaire will only be seen by Aon. They will not be shared with individual employees or anyone else at Union Pacific. Responses to the work questionnaire are for research purposes only and therefore have to affect on the employees’ jobs.

We are encouraging the employees to participate in the test pilot effort by providing their candid responses. Their participation is vital as it will help us develop a test that will be used to hire the next generation of successful craft employees.

If you have any questions please contact Ann Nakamura, Senior Manager – Selection & Assessment (amnakamu@up.com) or Sarah Stepanek, Intern – Selection & Assessment (srstepan@up.com) in Union Pacific’s Human Resources Labor Relations department.

If you’re on the clock and it’s not immoral, unethical, or unsafe, I’m not sure on what grounds you can refuse to do it. Sit in front of the computer for 3 hours and collect your extra money.

Why would they be working on new testing for new hires when everyone is being laid off?

Gotcha. I hadn't seen or heard it directly as to what is was for since I'm a intermodal yard guy. Revamping new hire testing makes sense than how it was put to me. Like I said I was just curious, and yeah still smells fishy.

You’re mistaken, poster. This has absolutely nothing to do with moving crafts. It is a test to “improve” the testing process for new hires. But that seems to be a disguise. Seems fishy to me as well.

Doesn't everyone have to take the text to move into a different craft? Wouldn't you want to be prepared and have that test under belt when they start eliminating positions around your area? You cannot move into all positions without that test.

I saw this hit our department. I wasn’t on the list of “participants” for whatever reason. I tried to make sense of it, but still can’t figure it out. It seemed just your average employees were “asked” to participate. Not specifically under/overperformers.
