Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Opinions matter more than data

Has anybody else noticed how much opinions of certain people matter more at Dell than actual, fully measurable data that proves them wrong? Especially when it comes to assessments.

People use their clout with the management to get rid of people they are threatened by or to get rid those they don’t like. And it is working for them.

And then they wonder how we are losing our top talent…

how is a MBA cert entitled to more promotion? if anything this proves the other two are more capable. Need to be more specific like my colleague who is promoted because she is more popular and has her name listen in a high visible project despite contributing to nothing but having her name listed while we all who does the work gets nothing because Dell rewards nothing if you make things happen. Dell rewards loudness and visibility at any cost. Another example is a colleague who misses her KPI for the whole year yet got promoted over another who met all KPIs because the first one is more popular and senior. Dell in a nutshell. And lifers wonder why Dell is only capable of producing powerpoints and presenting the same deck from 3 years ago under a different project name.

Everyone is ranked and rated behind the scenes. It’s a popularity contest. I have a coworker that has an MBA and was recently passed up for promotion by two others with only a highschool education.

both are equally important and can be misinformed/interpreted. What's important is consistency and alignment with what the manager thinks and what the data shows and what other people thinks and how manager and people in charge handles the information. At the end of the day the people belongs to their manager's jurisdiction. If he wants to slaughter them irrationally, it is his call. Not happy, Tell Dell or leave.

Direct Managers rank the bottom 10% when it comes push comes to shove. Who better else to decide, someone who isn't even there? Sorry you couldn't cross the hurdle of being in the top 90%. Perhaps your next position will be a better fit for your skillset.
