Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

Thoughts - this is in relation to volunteer non union resignations -

Some areas in IT (not sure how many) are looking for volunteers to take the severance for when the layoffs occur. But this does not mean that it is guaranteed.

No additional information is given with it.

Also, many in IT have been told they are safe and not getting laid off.

If you are not one of those "safe" people, and you are not part of the good ole boys group or people who are close to retirement. What is a reason to volunteer? Job ready or not, does this mean your manager doe not value you? Does this mean you have not played the corporate politics right? Does this mean you need to be a manager or director to be safe? Whatever that means.

What advantage would it be for the individual to volunteer , without getting anything more. Ya still get walked out just the same.

What questions would you be asking if you were in this group and not "safe"?

Is this legal? That's always fun to just ask.

Has your area had this occur this year?

Thank You!

Good luck to us all & may the odds be be forever in your favor!

The benefit would be if you have other employment options you can take the new job and still collect UP severance package (months of continued UP pay checks). You would free up 1 slot for some other soul, maybe someone with no other options, that may not then be laid off.

“Safe” is often speculation that there may be several layers of underlings that would go first. If a percentage is asked for in a department a manager likely to go before a director assuming that the director grew up doing that manager job, and could cover both jobs (double duty). It wouldn’t work the same the other way around if the manager could not handle the director work. If it is Numbers (heads) they want the weakest links go first, you spare your workhorses as long as you can. That said none are “safe” if the order coming down is “we don’t have the same needs we once did for your department. Mechanical hits are a good example, it doesn’t matter what your level if you worked at south Morell, for example, everybody goes.

IT is not safe, it depends on the order coming down from corporate. When what to be downsized becomes large sections of “functional areas” suddenly fewer AVPs and General Directors even will be culled. They then would not be needed the work to be done by them lessened. What they are talking about with PSR is exactly this. Not a small percentage cut from this dept or that but huge segments removed and hundreds or even thousands culled because segments of functional areas for business completely change and get removed. It will not be are you or your supervisor better liked and protected. It will be what can you provide further in this new business environment and every one you ever knew could get sent away, or none, where you offer value forward.

I have heard the same thing in IT.

Nobody told me I"m safe though.

And if someone was told, they are not stupid enough to say

Hi , my name is joe blow and I am safe.

doh!

Who is safe (or has been told they're safe) in IT?

Is the person offering the severance legally allowed? Did he or she show you the paperwork? I am thinking they don't have the authority to give you anything and it's just a way for them to trick you into sharing too much of your personal business for their selfish benefit.

Shame on you UP.

So people already know they are not being laid off while the rest of us lose sleep night after night waiting and wondering. wtf. . If people can know they are not getting laid off, tell the others they are not part of the special group. . . be fair about it. This is complete b.s. UP.

If I get an offer, hell yes, I"m outta here! The rest of the clowns can keep their shi*fest.

There are companies including IT that don't play these games with peoples' lives.

Sounds like they have who they want to keep around and now want you to do the "hard" part and make their job easier. If you quit, then they are not the bad guy.
