“The government won’t let it happen.” Really? Anyone that thinks they know what the government will or won’t allow right now is living in...the past? Denial? Fantasy Island? Shoot, not even the government knows what they will or won’t let happen.

Look at it this way, Halliburton did not get Baker-Hughes because of the govt. You have 4 major class 1's and KCS if you would want to squeeze them in to that class.So almost the same example as oil field services if you knocked it down slowly it would essentially start to become a Monopoly. But not saying it could not happen. I am sure it would be great to have railroad going coast to coast but I really don't see the govt.letting that happen.Keep an eye CN there already in Louisiana is Mexico next for them.
I’m curious that if you say the government wouldn’t allow a merger between the UP and another railroad or 2, then what is the difference from that and when the UPRR bought out Southern Pacific? There are still plenty of other railroads out there, wouldn’t quite be a monopoly now would it?

This gets thrown around a lot here, always by people who come and go and never back up anything with facts. So I'm going to assume it's not happening soon.
