Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

We are already losing people

We have already started losing people who are tired of waiting for GM to decide their fate and are heading for greener pastures on their own. I'd lie if I said I was not considering it myself. I just loath the idea of possibly missing out on severance.

How does attrition look on your team?

Stupid c--ts. I live in a home that one could only hope to dream of. Without a degree, without the nonsense they tricked you into getting from college. And, without the debt. With a skill this in demand, multiple job offers are in the works.

Through a bit of financial education and prudent planning, I can afford my lifestyle, my home, my utilities, my food, and all expenses, at a rate of $12 per hour. That's not to say, I would settle for that, only that it's my minimal amount needed to pay my bills. $12 per hour is VERY doable for the most intellectually incapable.

So I leave you with this. Can you afford to pay your bills at $12 per hour? Can you afford a $400k home, at $12/hr? Don't think it's possible? Don't know how it's possible? It's because intellectual capability eludes you. You would have zero idea where to start. At the end of the day, there are some that ARE your intellectual superior.

Enjoy, as I will as well. F**k off scum.

Butt Hurt....you are the straw that keeps stirring this drink. You know as well as everyone else that has been following this string that your inferiority complex is rooted in the fact that you have no college degree, are unpromotable, and you have no one to blame but yourself. Go back and read your first post that mentions the "piece of paper" 8 times and you will gain some clarity. Again, if you are so angry over GMs requirement for managers and executive level employees to be degreed, why don't you get off your uneducated a$$, go back to school, and work toward a degree rather than b1tching about it and bashing those of us who have one?? You still haven't answered that basic question--speaking of weak comebacks.

I think Dr Gagowizz was just laid off ? lmfao, Geez talk about bitter let's hope they don't go postal ! Anyway Yes I was told this morning by my manager that this is definitely not performance based , his job along with many others are also hanging by a thread , Monday the 4th I was told will be the beginning of the next round, I'll be glad when it's over what ever the case may be , so many good folks in my group

Hey Butt Hurt....your bitterness is amusing. Keep going. And did I ever say once that you needed to get the degree right out of high school? No. But since you have been longing for that valued "piece of paper" (your words) for all your years and clearly have an inferiority complex without it, why don't you get off your lazy a$$ and do something about it?

The only one pissing and moaning is you ! Perhaps some people couldn't attend school right after high school and are attending later in life , your attitude comes off as entitled clearly , of that is upsetting to to you well , that is your issue. I don't think the posters intention was to bruise or hurt your fragile ego and or feelings , sounds like you need a hugg , maybe a few counselor sessions ? It will all work out take a deep breath.

Hey @XmJvx89-1rah (aka Butt-Hurt)....the only one saying that a college degree is an "entitlement" is YOU. Yeah, I see lots of worthless millenial graduates who expect something for nothing but that is a product of their generation, not because they earned a degree. Stop painting everyone with the same brush. It was YOUR decision long ago not to get the college degree. If that's a barrier to entry for some promotion you want, then get off your a$$ and do something about it rather than bashing all of us who already did. No one here is saying we are smarter or more intelligent than you because we have a degree. However, we are better planners because we knew the prerequisite and completed it. You always have an opportunity to make amends. Quit b1tching and p1ssing and moaning and do something about it.

To- 1nda , um yep you seem challenged alright, the person that wrote the long response doesn't sound jealous at all , most new hires coming in to GM are dumb as a rock and couldn't beat their way out of a paper bag and I am being nice. A degree is a door opener not an entitlment , anyone can study in college and pass if the effort is there to begin with but succeeding in the real world is another, no the person's response wasn't jealousy but real world experience and fact in the automotive business at GM. The other poster said they are in school and had support from GM managers and colleges but they we're still let go , bottom line is GM doesn't cares about career path development for those they favor and hold that prestigious framed paper and if you can't seem to comprehend that I recommend you give it the old college try and study up but this time pay close attention to the game and maybe you too can be a winner. Michigan Tech ;) 😉

Hey @XmJvx89-1rah...it's highly apparent that you have a 25+ year hard-on for those with that "piece of paper" that you mention about 8 times in your post. You are obviously butt-hurt because of your life decision to not attend college. If it's such a sensitive issue for you, why don't you get off your a$$ and take some classes to make amends for this perceived slight of yours? Or is it much easier creating "woe is me" posts on a layoff site? You made your bed and need to sleep comfortably in it--rather than bashing the 90-something percent of people who go out and get educated to expand and challenge themselves at Universities across the country. I, for one, am very proud of my 2 "pieces of paper" that were well-earned. I'm also proud that I have obtained a rare skill while working at GM that they will likely find very difficult to part ways with. I also train others. Your jealousy is unbecoming.

I'm a single parent working twords my degree , now no job , thank you GM , I had almost 18 years contract. All I know is automotive I stayed because that's what I liked to do , I had support from my managers too , they didn't expect I would be gone. Thank you Marry now I could loose my home , Bravo on your Max profits and everyone gets their bonus while I got laid off just before Christmas. You f---ing c--t.

I would like to respond you you directly. Anyone that down votes you is an abomination to the species. I empathize with the 18 years contract, as I am not that indifferent from you. I also had the managers favor, as well as my peers, my manager actually stated I was one of the most talented individuals within my department, and others stated I would give up a half dozen new hires just to retain his talent. I was asked to train at their university among my peers, because I lacked a piece of paper, I was never eligible for a direct hire position. I was unacceptable. Yet I trained many hundreds of degreed, and dual degreed candidates into the successes they are today, people that were mostly embarrassments when it came to talent. Some were ok, but most subpar. This is a GM policy, which means as contract, your employment is on the line daily. Talent be damned.

There was once a time, where experience was equally considered along with schooling. With multiple paths up the mountain, each teaches us what we need to become efficient and effective. Far too often, we would find these BS and master degree candidates, unable to do what was required, and that we wanted experience. Today, the managers' position, and ultimately the HR position, is they can't touch you unless you paid 100k+ for a piece of paper that said you paid 100k+ for tuition. It neither defines intellectual capability, nor talent, but rather how well you regurgitated the nonsense from your professors mouth. The worlds between experience, and text book nonsense has become blurred among hiring managers. Hiring managers, and HR representatives, are the lowest common denominator when it comes to identifying talent. It only makes sense to promote them from a corporate point of view.

I am one of the former who learned on their own, and with that knowledge has trained hundreds. I have zero dollars in school loans, yet I will never make the ranks of the big three without a piece of paper. Today, it's quite like placing a school child at the helm of your corporation and hoping for the best. They simply don't know what's best for their company. This window is closing for us within this world. Find the companies that value talent, and could care less about a degree, or live within the world that requires a piece of paper, and somehow thinks they'll get the job done. Why pay once, when you can pay three times for inadequate talent? It is however, requiring in time to hold that piece of paper. But, that paper will not define whether you can do the job, only that you've paid the toll for entry. Think differently.

There is a saying. Don't let schooling get in the way of education. When you understand this, you will understand the world. You will know what you need to do.

Is MB a c**t? Absolutely. Shes an abomination upon GM, but she's simply a puppet much like those that came before her. She's playing to a script. I'd recommend you best learn what this script is.

This is what i ineffective, clueless leadership wants. Good people will leave. People on a downward career slide or those who can’t move on (devs with lack of confidence and nch) will stick around to be tacken advantage of by bad management. Good luck wherever you guys land.

I've got a job lined up. I'm just waiting for severance or the bonus if I don't get laid off.

I've gotten higher than 100% bonus for the last five years, so I assume I'm a top performer. If you're getting 80% you might want to start job searching.

I'm leaving. Calendar is perfect this year with March 1st falling on a Friday. Give your notice Feb. 15th if you think GM won't walk you out the door right away. If you work March 1st, your benefits carry over the entire month which gives you ample time to establish a new start date with your new employer.

This means you should be able to determine if you are part of the layoff pool. Assumed date is Feb. 4th and also secures your 2018 Bonus on Feb. 28th.

My team announced one person is leaving on Jan. 31 by their own accord. We lost 3 people last year by their own choice. It's been a mix of good people and bad. I think the best who have marketable skills will also jump ship.

Probably 100-200 ppl already left this year but GM wanted 5700 ppl to go . So that means they still need to get rid of 5500 ppl. Many of them will come from the list they offered the voluntary seperstions.
