Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

VSPer Question

So I took the VSP, as did half of my department. We are getting released at the end of March. Since the announcement of how many of us were leaving, 75% of the remaining department has quit, with yet another person going after he gets a certification in a couple of months. We're a 24x7 op, there won't be enough coverage to man all of our shifts. Of course management hasn't hurried to fill any positions...

My worry is that they are going to try and force some of us VSPers to stay longer... Are they able to? I don't see anything in the FAQ, but of course they can always justify whatever they want citing 'the needs of the business'.

"The need of the business was already considered prior to giving you an exit date." - Yeah, sure. Would be the first time this happened in more than 20 years. It's "get rid of people no matter what", then once they're gone figure out what it was they worked on and try to off-load the work on the remaining shoulders.

It appears to me that the dates are locked no matter what happens. My org is in chaos. Numerous individual contributors and all but one manager leaving. He will get killed with all the mess steamrolling his way. Our very large customers have gone postal asking how we can do such a thing in the middle of major projects and deployments blah blah blah... "UNACCEPTABLE!!" Since I have a great boss who has always taken care of me I had a weak moment and told him if he needed me to delay my March departure until June I could handle it. He ran it up the pole and got pretty much a "no way no how" response. C'est la vie..

You don't have to worry about staying because you won't be. The business doesn't really care about continuity at the executive level. It's the lower level people (and the customers) who are left that will suffer.

Why are you worried? Do you think they can MAKE you stay?

If you have a March date, you will leave in March, end of story. The need of the business was already considered prior to giving you an exit date. It is binding both ways.

The company can do whatever they want for “needs of business”. I got the December date and 75% of my peers took it also. My title is considered front line and we all had 20 or more direct reports. The company didn’t hold any of us. Instead the last 3 weeks of December they promoted within and we them.

The company doesn’t want to have to pay you more sti, prorated vaca, benefits, and a p-ss-d off management employee any longer. Trust u will be gone. You will love the feeling! Good luck
