Layoffs Coming Monday, Feb 4th with Police Officers

I am friends with the security personnel in our office (Austin North) so this morning I was chatting with them and casually asked if they had heard or knew anything. They said Monday (Feb 4th) is the date. Their company was pulling in addition personnel and hiring off-duty police officers to aid in the escorting out of affected individuals.

While the date isn't new news, I was surprised they were hiring armed police officers. I thought we were adults but it seems that we can't be treated as such.

To @ endgame , you are absolutely correct , I found a ton of great jobs in other parts of the country , the only issue for me is I can not leave my home state for family reasons but let me just say if I could go I'd the hell out of here. I even found fantastic opportunity in other countries too. People that have no attachments have the pick of the litter for a new gig.

@Endgame

Your post literally had my eyes roll around in my head. Don't you hear yourself? You're YOUNG and have plenty of gained experience at GM. You can apply anywhere in the US (the economy is good) and get a job any time. You have lemons, make some dmn lemonade and stop squeezing the dmn lemons in your eyes.

I work here, and have also heard Monday. I have been told I am “at risk” but nobody knows anything for certain.

I have another interview internally on Friday.. I can only imagine what hell this is going to be.

I’m only 25yrs old and have been with this company since I graduated college in 2015.

My career might be ending before it even began....

I am f---ing terrified.

Let's see. 6000 people let go. If .1% of those folks end up going postal, either on the 4th or returning that means that there will be potentially 6 armed shooters looking for to extract some sort of retribution. Have you looked at our security? They are a freaking joke, I drive by the guard shake at the WTC off of Chicago Rd early each AM and more often than not the guard is either sleeping or gabbing with another security friend in a car half blocking the exit route. I wouldn't trust those folks to guard my leftover lunch in the fridge!

I spoke with my security friend at Austin North. They have been told nothing about the layoffs and their manager claims to have no information. So unable to confirm this rumor.

Who has time to stand around talking to the security guards? I hope you enjoyed your time at GM. Thanks for taking one for the team.

I recall seeing security guards posted in working areas whenever there were layoffs during the bankruptcy purge. It’s just a precaution.

If you are not getting called on Feb 4th you are safe. I was told that GM's policy make sure that the manager/director has to tell in person that they are getting laid off.

Has anyone in Austin been told to be onsite on Monday the 4th? I haven’t been told and I feel like I’m likely to get cut.

Don’t wait and Don’t be afraid

Don’t wait and Don’t be afraid. Tips for sleeping at night (from those of us who have moved on):

. Update your resume now (pull your performance reviews to help remember your accomplishments past 5-10 years

. Update your LinkedIn profile. Search jobs like yours on linkedin and when you find someone’s profile similar to yours (engineering manager, buyer, hr professional, use that as a guide to enhance your resume and linkedin profile)

. Turn your LinkedIn profile notification ON to let recruiters know you are looking

. Google articles on resume format and interviewing and using LinkedIn

. Come up with your plan B (what expenses can you temporarily cut now like Starbucks, eating out, cable, etc

. Create a job posting log/notebook and log each job you post for, date, did you hear back, status.

. Use LinkedIn Jobs Search and search for keywords for your field (Ex: global purchasing buyer hr Human Resources finance account manager)

. Refine your search by distance and also number of days job’s been posted. Anything older than 30 days may have been filled or interviewees already selected. Don’t waste your time with those. I limited mine to last 7 days and got more recruiters calling me on those fresh ones.

. Don’t out price yourself from getting a call. The Big 3 pay much higher than others. Use Glassdoor to determine what similar salaries are for companies you are interested in. List that salary to at least get in the interview door. You can negotiate higher once your in. It worked for me and they offered me much higher than my minimum once they learned my experience.

. Don’t worry. The market is hot now with many jobs. Start now and don’t wait. Schedule time before and after your workday to refine your resume and post for at least 3-5 jobs per day. Take care of YOU.

. Don’t ever forget that you are smart, amazing and have a lot to offer. This too shall pass. And your next company will appreciate you so much more than this one. Then you’ll know it was meant to be.

We’ve survived and we will help you.

PS. Take all personal belongings home now just in case you get selected to leave. No one deserves to touch your stuff. You deserve better than that and you will get better at your next company. We’ve made it to the other side and we will be cheering for you. They will miss you when your gone and they find out how much work you really did. You deserve SO much better and we will be cheering for you.

I’ve been to the Austin IT Center and I am not IT. I feel for all of you. What a super smart group of people. You will land a new job fast. You deserve way better than this nonsense. And when the next hiring manager asks you “why were you let go” you tell them “as communicated in the media I was part of a massive layoff by a company whose leaders can’t agree on IT’s role and the company’s direction”. Then you tell them how skilled you are and how you can help their organization based on the job posting requirements and your talents. Also check the post in this forum titled “Don’t Worry, Don’t Be Afraid” for job posting tips. Austin you deserve better and those of us who have jumped ship (including corporate) have already landed a great job. You will too.

Yes, finally, Monday is the day. I will enjoy Super Bowl, drinking with friends and then deal with the layoff on Monday. Moving on with my life. I don't care how they do it but am happy that its over.

being prepared is the best option, no matter what. All I need to know is the exit criteria and why a particular employee was let go. the recruiters in town already see a flood of applications from GM employees. Guess what the first question they are going to ask - why were you let go?

does employer have the moral responsibility to provide the criteria chosen and the reason to the separated employee?

Wow. Well said. I have been here for awhile and have seen that same cycle many times. I have also seen the people who speak up are never listened to, then later on Management will share that same idea that workers said months before and bring it up as a "new idea".

"build fast fail fast management" -- yes, this is what I witness every day. delivery date is king, issues be damned. then people point fingers when issues occur in production. shift around resources so they can look like they are taking action. lose the knowledge they need to maintain and improve. thus the cycle continues. the only thing that never changes is management & their mentality. those who try to speak up are punished, directly or indirectly.

O God please let it be so. Tired of listening and waiting for this Sh!@#dt to go down. I hope Randy, Ahmed and all the directors are included- just hoping. GM needs new ideas, not build fast fail fast management.

Security is always third party, they have no horses in the race. The Warren security detail was recently replaced in the last twelve month, and are brand new. I have no idea if this was intended as an agenda, or simply as a cost cutting proposal.

At the end of the day, they are completely impartial to you and corporate needs. They will do the jobs requested of them. AKA, they are not your friends.

The larger question remains. Why is GM dismissing such a large force, with absolute distrust in any of their personnel to leave respectably? Could it be that GM themselves, are not the honorable ones? The thought.

Quite an interesting news!! The managers, directors wouldn’t know anything but those security guards would know everything, according to OP. Besides, when the whole thing is kept so secret in GM, the security guard would leak it out to someone who would eventually post it here!!
