Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

Underpaid

Just wanted to support DOL's allegation that people on visas get underpaid. I am being underpaid almost 10% than the market standard. and 8% below the prevailing wage set by DOL. I have been underpaid for the last two years.

The management is corrupt. You cannot speak openly to your manager about anything that you are not happy with. You will be targeted.

The reality is that Oracle hires through H1B visa to get cheap labor.

Folks, Believe me, It doesn't help to just complain or cry in forums. If you feel you've been treated poorly or been underpaid then talk openly to your manager to have a plan to fix your situation but most importantly make sure you are worth what you claim you are. Work hard and strategically and once you feel confident enough, demand what you deserve!. If you're no heard, then leave or move to a better group. If the sue goes south for Oracle you may end getting few pennies but don't bet on it as your main strategy instead work on the things you can do better and change.

From experience i can tell its possible to fix your salary if it's not right, but you really need to work on it intelligently with your management chain.

Good luck

"Oracle pays your immigration fees and attorney fees and that provides you the opportunity to live in a country that you wanted to live in. "

That's required by the law. The company has to pay for it in order to have employees lol. This is the reasoning the company has been using to pay the h1b workers less. This is not a favour the company is doing to the h1b workers , but exploiting them for thier situation. That's why there is suit filed by DOL.

Convenient for HR to send out their email refuting this charge late in the day this past Friday. Way to go to bury it over the weekend.

I'm one of the people who said leave and no, I was not in the upper echelon. I even got raises most years and I was not overpaid. I just realized that I had two choices: live in a constant state of wondering when my number was up, or taking a risk and moving on. I chose the latter. I'm just saying that it's not going to change so you either stay there and accept what they pay you or you leave.

I am not on VISA, work for company 13 years and are underpaid by 20% (I know fo sure, mgmt level employee). I also have engineers with VISA and they are not underpaid because of VISA for sure. In fact, having H1B obligates Oracle to match market level salary (if you are below it) - again, I know it because I had to do adjustment for one of my guys (0.3% of his salary). IF you are underpaid it's because other reasons (too loyal ;)) than VISA

yes, there are laws protecting H1B workers that guarantee a minimum and that minimum increases sometimes which requires Oracle to increase the salary for H1B workers even though there is no increase for non-H1B workers.

There will be workers on the same team, doing the same work that make more and that make less than H1B workers. Its entirely normal. What you get paid is often based on what you ask for when you are hired. Somewhat. The hiring manager always has a range they expect to pay.

Don't complain if you are here on an H1B. Oracle pays your immigration fees and attorney fees and that provides you the opportunity to live in a country that you wanted to live in. Don't take that for granted. If you don't like that, leave.

Believe me, your salary is not that low comparatively to other Oracle employees.

I'm not a VP of anything and I haven't gotten a raise for over 7 years. Nothing no bonus, no raise but I did get 2 "promotions" with no salary increase. I'm at the mid-point of the fake salary ranges and the explanation is that I'm being compensated within range. I agree it's difficult to leave but unless you're willing to accept never getting any more comp than you get today - you take the difficult steps to improve your situation. Move, sell your house, relocate, commute longer - if money is your primary goal then you do whatever you need to. If you chose to stay, then do it with the knowledge that it's your choice to accept whatever wages Oracle want to give you. They have no legal obligation to pay you a market wage. I'd argue they have an obligation as a company to provide better wages but they don't care if you leave and have no interest in keeping you. They want young people who will work for anything and have no interest in your expertise. Once you accept that as true, maybe it's the incentive to move yourself to another company that has a soul - Oracle does not care about employees or customers.

I'd like to say for all those people that say - leave. This isn't always easy to do - it's not always easy to get another job. People have family, obligations. These people are probably in the upper echelon themselves and probably are making some of the top salaries so why should they care. This is also the reason for their opinions.

When O hardly gives raises to most of it's employees for over 10 years - how is that right. It's cause they can - the top 1-3$ of any company that does this doesn't care about the workers - only the bottom $$$$$$ line.

I'd also like to comment on the large large tax cut that large corporations got - but most didn't pass any of this on and this tax cut is permanent and started before the individual tax cut started which also ISN'T permanent. How is that right and fair?

LE founded this company for profitable revenue, no for supporting Trump and move the H1B workers back home.

HR just sent a long winded email about this. They call it "ridiculous".

What's ridiculous is that O has NOT been giving people of all colours and creeds decent raises while the cost of living increases every year. I guess all that tax break only helped LE to have more $ to build a better yacht(you're still gonna loose) and acquire naming rights to Giant's park.

All these people who are saying leave if you don't like the salary must be white Americans who are getting good salaries. On top of that, they are also probably Trump supporters who don't like people of color in their country.

“As we say it's free market only obligation on employer is to pay minimum wages. Life isn't always fair people need to grow up and learn this fact rather than crying about being underpaid. Plain and simple find a job that pays what you are worth.”

You so don’t get it bc you’re brainwashed into thinking you can’t effect change. The Powers That Be have planted ideas into your head that make you act against your own interests. Or you ARE a corporate bloodsucker who benefits from the system as it stands.

I was transferred to Oracle US with an H-1B visa. A bit more than 1 year later, I get a call from my manager, saying "hey, I'm giving you a raise. Yes, I kind of have to, because of the new work visa law". So I got bumped to the 'least possible salary' companies had to pay for H1B workers. At least this made it very easy for me to get a different job; basically any other company could cover that salary easily... I didn't even want to think about how much the 'legal residents' in my team were making, but you can be sure it was a lot more...

Everyone at O is underpaid except for the Big 3. Terrible company, terrible culture, treat customers like c-ap. Get out before it all implodes.

“Remember this is the free market and if you don't like the salary - you should leave.”

You realize that this plays right into the hands of capitalistic corporate policies. Because no one is ever challenged or held accountable. When the US had more labor unions, even the non-union shops had to keep up with pay and policies, if they wanted to attract anyone to work for them. There was a systematic removal of unions from the US work landscapes, followed by the destruction of the the employee-employer social contract. Then H-1Bs, rise of contract work, the sh--ty gig economy, etc.

Coincidence? Nope. Not by a long shot.

You don’t like it, you leave! H1B people shouldn’t complain either. They are free to go.

If people under visa feel they are underpaid, then they should leave, go back to their third world country and leave jobs to Americans.

While I'm sympathetic to anyone still working at O, there are no laws that obligate them to pay anyone a "market wage" (except minimum wage). Those are guidelines and not mandatory. Remember this is the free market and if you don't like the salary - you should leave. People on visas don't have the same opportunities to leave but that's the breaks. US citizens that don't get paid what they feel they deserve should walk out the door. Oracle doesn't pay you what your education, expertise or job duties indicate you should be paid - but you have no obligation to stay with an employer as egregious as Oracle. They are well known for their bully tactics and boys club mentality.

Also support the alagations it’s evident. My people of color friends have even called EAP about it. How can I work for a company like this? This is so 3rd world/1970’s culture. As a person of color it’s horrible and I don’t what’s kept me hear for so long - guess denial is part of the trauma. The question turned into what am I doing wrong rather than getting the f*** out!
