Downstream Work Life Balance?

I've heard a lot of negative things about work/life balance at oil and gas companies, but my friend who is co-oping with Exxon right now said that all of her coworkers are working 40 hour weeks as process engineers in downstream. I thought the whole point of oil and gas paying their employees so much was because they expected you to work 60 hours. Is it true that there are some departments with reasonable hours?

I call BS on this. Most contact engineers work 45-50 hours per week + miscellaneous things at home with your laptop

40 productive hours or 60 unproductive hours? Its not how hard you work necessarily, its how smart you work. Youve probably heard that one. Getting a good nights sleep and eating nutritiously, its amazing how much you can accomplish in "only" 40 solid hours at the office.
