Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

Age Discrimination

Remember, if you believe this was the primary consideration for being laid off, it depends on the structure of your team, not GM as a whole.

Just wait. You'll see. After 40, you have to hide your age. Keep the hair, wash away the gray, watch your weight, dress young. Clear out anything on your resume more than 15 years ago, and remove the dates from jobs and education. Clear out the family photos from your desk. Don't make a big deal at work about things going on with your kids or your health.

IT field is notorious for age discrimination. Don't fool yourself. Be ready.

Besides having higher salaries, older employees have higher healthcare costs and life insurance premiums. Is getting rid of them because of this age discrimination? Probably, but good luck proving it. Younger employees take note, though. When your time comes, GM will care nothing about your loyalty or years of hard work either.

Look we all know it's BS , I worked with two older ladies that are so incredibly smart , very talented individuals , we all know some people work hard and know their business and some do not , it's par for the course anywhere you go. Each of these ladies should have been promoted as technical experts but they unfortunately have not been , I was a technician and witnessed talented people past over for who knows why. We have all seen this happen , will it ever stop , I hope that it does.

"anyone can learn new skills at any age and actually older staffers are more valuable to the company"

Wrong. Not in the eyes of large corporations.

I know of a couple of gray haired high performers that might fit this. Not the highest paid, but the best producers. If they get cut, could be because of the gray hair. We will see.
