Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

If you get laid off can you get rehired?

If you are one of the people in their 30s who get laid off can you get rehired in the future?

Some people like me that have custody and can't leave this God forsaken arm pit of Michigan don't have alot of choice , I was contract not salaried so for me I guess it's a bit different. If I could leave I would a different go to aerospace . Since I was contract I wonder if I'd be able to go back , not my first choice GM , but all three truthfully are the same , one big racket. I am only 40 ,

The last round of massive layoffs went on and on (2006-2008?). After it was finally over, contractors were brought back in first - many in their 40’s/50’s, then sometime later - about 5 years ago, many of them were being hired direct. Some of those contracting were previously direct, and among those, a handful were hired back direct. GM had cut into muscle and some very hard-working, experiences people were let go. And just like this time, GM said those let go should not be rehired, but they were. I think everyone knew that there was a limit to the deadwood among those cast out and some highly-skilled, hard-working people were brought back. But this was years later.

If this purge doesn’t drag on for years like last time, I know I’ll see people back, at least as contractors. If I’m let go, I won’t hesitate to go back as a contractor - mainly out of convenience.

The work has been good, and I know HR and legal probably have the biggest say out of who goes and who stays. For that reason, I am not going to take it personal if I’m hit. I plan to leave with my head held high and mindful I might want or need to go back after things blow over.

Yes. Those in other age categories will not be considered, with the following exceptions:

  • If you are 28 or 29, but have had a hard life and feel as though you are already in your 30s, there is a chance for you.

  • If you are in your 40s, but work out a lot and look a little younger than you are - you may also be considered for rehire.

What kind of ageist question is this?

Likely, but where's your dignity and self-respect? Why return to a partner who already kicked you to the curb once? This is slightly lower on the abused housewife spectrum....keep going back to the person that doesn't deserve it. Just leave and don't look back.

Having worked at GM and other private sector companies, there are much better places to work than GM. Separate your identity, self-worth, and skill set from GM. Make your brand YOU, not General Motors.

You could come back to GM as a contractor. In fact - that is what GM hopes because then they get to keep your skills without the commitment and hassle of HR. But I know of nobody who was let go as a GM employee and later returned as one again. Not saying it’s impossible - just extremely unlikely. I’ve heard GM doesn’t like to bring past SSNs back into the company. So a name and SSN change might make it possible.

If it happens move on and don't look back.

Typically when these kinds of cuts happen at companies, in the future those people who did get cut are looked at as not having been good enough to keep at the time hence are not given any favorable consideration in the future.

"Lay off" of a salaried position is basically the same thing as getting fired except you have a whole lot of others going through same thing at the same time. unfortunate but true.

possible - it was in a socrates article that rehire while possible would be highly unlikely and on exception basis

I have always thought that when you get severed, it’s over for good. But then again, that may only be for those who voluntarily left.

In any case, would you want to come back to a company that eliminates their own employees, without first exhausting every other possible cost-cutting alternative?

Lol. Why would you want to come back??

But yes, rehire is possible.
