Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

It’s almost like they’re dragging this on on purpose

I can’t seem to find a logical reason why they are dragging this on for this amount of time, but I also find it hard to believe that a company of this scale couldn't have organized the layoffs better. Don’t want to think that they wanted to make it harder for us but that’s the only thing that I could come up with.

Despite all the complaints, we all were given 90 days notice of this 'happening'. I was let go this morning, and although it was awkward, it was handled professionally and thoughtfully. I was offered the choice as to whether I wanted to go back to my desk, out the side door, front door or say good bye to anyone which I took advantage to say good bye to the chef in the cafeteria. I'm sure some people had questions, broke down or complained so I understand that this process can take time. I know the manager who walked me out (who I did not report to) and it was tough on them too. There is blame to go around for how things got out of control the past few years, but we got notice, and a decent package at least for my situation. It s---s not to know and keep waiting but once 'it' happens take some time to stare blankly, feel sick, sorry etc but things feel better once you start moving again. I'd also rather have had the time to prepare for this rather than be blindsided after the holidays.

Trump and his tariffs didn't cause this. While not helpful, the layoffs would have happened. No, GM management owns this.

Look up the WARN Act, very good read. GM must provide 60 days notice of a mass layoff or plant closure. With the announcement near Thanksgiving, the 60 day window is up.

Michigan elected Trump not Mary Barra. So who’s fault is it that Michigan elected Trump. It’s not Mary Barra who put tariffs on steel. Mary is just reacting to the environment that we are currently in. This is just the beginning. Next in the line are ford employees after that I can guarantee it will be Fca and then it will be the supply base. When G when the big tree stop and start canning new programs that’s when you will see massive massive layoffs and blood bad Blood bath done

No surprise here. When I joined, I asked about the Strategic workforce plan to address critical skills retention. GM still doesn't have one. It's been a few years, too.

MB has an ax to grind with Trump. She's a hardcore feminist bent on sending a message to Trump. This early warning sign was before any announcements were made:

The logical explaination is that there is no reason beyond incompetence. GM rushed this idea out the door prior to third quarter earnings. The timing of the layoff announcement (and free cash flow initiative) was just to get investors happy that GM is making transformative movements and boose fourth quarter earnings. They had no plan in place. The firing date was moved back several times for that reason. They actually waited until the last possible minute to do this. Fourth quarter earnings are coming up fast, and if they didn't make the cuts they promised, they would be in hot water.

GM screwed up and the employees are paying the price for it, as always.

MB is a never-Trumper. Anything she can do to cause pain to those who may/may not have voted for him is her intention.

I had heard that this was originally scheduled for mid-Jan but opted to defer as they didn't want to bring negative publicity during Auto Show. Also hopes that this negative publicity would be deferred until after State of Union, however, due to Federal Shutdown, this cannot be avoided.

GM is trying to send a message to Trump about the impact of tariffs so have no qualms about making this as painful as possible on it's employees for maximum exposure.
