Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

Did managers not have input on who to lay off?

The people chosen seem like they might as well have been picked out of a hat. Some incredibly low-performing people remain, meanwhile several of the most intensely hard working personnel are gone. Rebuilding from this is going to be ridiculous.

The thing that bothers me is I got laid off as a NCH who was recognized at the CIO level in my first 3 months of GM, was awarded the maximum 7% raise the first two 6 month periods for my performance (on every 6 month review since my start with GM, I have received "exceeds expectations"). I did everything I could to be the best employee within the CCA operations space where I was asked to be after accepting a development role. I have always been bothered by the amount of people that get away with doing nothing and it wouldn't surprise me if they are still with GM. So with this being said, I feel like GM held me back in progressing in my career and am so happy that I got laid off so I can pursue another opportunity. My only problem is that I do not think anything I did at GM gave me experience towards a new job. Also, another problem I always had is that HR just fills positions with whoever gets hired instead of looking at their backgrounds and placing them according. So... GM, the reason IT is failing within your company is your own damn fault.

Managers did the stack ranking, probably based on age & high school-like criteria and who their Director told them to down-rank. That's why the lawyers had to step in. It would be hard to believe that Directors didn't tell their favorite managers who they put on the list.

No. Decisions were made at director level. Not random, not performance based. Elimination of roles, projects, and other strategic groupings. Legal reviewed all selections to check for bias and lawsuit potential.

Consider the careful choice of the word "restructuring" over "reduction".

Legal made the decisions for demographics. Managers had to choose from that.

I was told (privately), during the 2009 layoffs, that HR consultants and attorneys make the "selections" to avoid lawsuits by "aggrieved" demographic groups.

Mine was not aware or consulted. He was less than impressed was the feedback I got from ex-coworkers in the group.

The director whom made the call, I have never met the person.

I was promoteded 7 months ago as well to a Lead position from specialist also with great CAP scores previously, a little shocked by this.

My fiancé works there...totally stressed out, as over 460 people have already been let go already, and they're not done yet. She finds out tomorrow. This s---s :(
