Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

Two weeks???

People keep saying this will continue for two weeks, that GM already confirmed that. What is everybody referring to? Was there an announcement I missed?

I'm no fan of GM, but I'm having trouble believing even they would be so cruel to make us go through something this stressful for two full weeks.

Yes sad reality is there is no good way to do this. It needed to be done so GM can sustain themselves. They could have said nothing (no forewarning) and just cut people. That would of been more devastating and shocking. At least knowing for a few months meant that employees could watch their spending and be prepared. There are people that live paycheck to paycheck and as bad as the waiting is at least one can try to be mentally and financially prepared. This is the way it goes when working for the man.

How do you propose a company should conduct a layoff? How could GM have done it better. If this was your family's business and you see the writing on the wall that your company has to make a change now to ensure it will be around in 5, 10, 15, 20, 100 years, would you not do it? How can a company sustain itself without making tough decisions like this? It's do the layoff of 4,000 people now or jeopardize the entire company closing and 100,000's of people not have jobs. Reality bites sometimes!

I think two weeks is for the entire process to complete for, I think they are going facility by facility but majority of the lay offs will happen between 4th, 5th and the 6th of Feb and then week of Feb 18th will be caps of all remaining employees and the bonuses.

I think GM is not the company anyone wants to work on anymore, very unprofessional way of managing this layoff and we wont know that they will further layoff after mid of this year or may be end of this year
