Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

Morally what Oracle does is very questionable

Morally what Oracle does is very questionable.

As an employee - if you honestly give your all to Oracle - work hard and to the best of your ability - put in your 8-10 hours a day - take weekend and out of hours calls with good grace - keep yourself up on the latest technology - always work towards customer success - and deliver against your goals.... Then Oracle should NOT play games with you.

The employee / employer relationship should be mutually respectful and this is what is missing.

Oracle will say all the right things to onboard you, but then almost immediately the games will start.

If you're the kind of person that wants to stay for 2 to 4 years and then move on, then it's not too much of a concern, but for those with 10+ years of solid, reliable and honest service just end up getting screwed and this is only "because they can".

Many folks with young families and mortgages to pay don't want to have to up and move every few years - and so are prepared to commit themselves to Oracle and give 100% for extended periods. It's these honest people who are the bedrock of many of the operations, support and delivery organizations that just get taken advantage of - "because Oracle can"

What kind of organization wants to start taking advantage of it's employees almost as soon as they're signed up ?

Most people would probably be reasonably happy if they never actually got a raise "in real terms" - but inflation is real, so getting poorer every year just breeds resentment.

Those at the top are getting 10's of millions of $ - but there's never anything for the worker bees.

If you're prepared to take a gamble - then I know of 2 people in the US who were offered a 10% hike to stay when they handed in their notice. They both left anyway... and of course if you call their bluff then so might you.

Well said @XsXXaIZ-1das .

Seriously, there is nothing like a company run by MH. He is a whole different level of apathetic ruthlessness. True, all companies and all CEOs care about their costs and their growth. And many do get into positions during downturns where they have to make cuts. But MH is a different kind of animal. He is only concerned with making his profit number. He believes that his head rests on it. Couple that with the fact that he is incompetent in the area of growing revenue and you have someone who will always resort to cost reduction to make his profit number. Sales slide and he accelerates cuts to keep up.

MH emaciated and all but decimated NCR. HP's board saw the results as a steady and slightly growing profit and hired him. They only looked at the number reported to the street. They didn't look inside the company to see what was actually happening. They thought, oh look someone to streamline and make us efficient. He then emaciated and all but decimated HP. CEOs do not get fired for expense report errors. And 2010 (when he was fired) was also long before CEOs got fired for s-xual harassment. Seriously, go look for instances prior to 2011 when a CEO got fired for an expense report or s-xual harassment. You'll be able to count them on a single hand, going back decades. HP all but chewed their own arms off to get rid of him before he sank the company completely.

LH is grappling with the fact that he impulsively hired his tennis buddy and brought a jackal into his chicken coop. And that analogy is unkind to jackals. There is no other experience on earth that equates to working for a company run by MH. Get out and go move on with life.

It is so much better on the outside. And the world outside of O is decades ahead. The hardest part about getting out is that having the O on the resume as a current position for more than 2-years is a major handicap in the interview process. Retool yourself and start the process of getting out. If you're lucky it'll only take you a year or two to find someone who will give you a chance. Most will look at you as institutionalized and possibly damaged. It's up to you to show that you are adaptable and nimble with lots of initiative. My own strategy was to tell employers that the reason I succeed at O was because I was counter culture: I was honest. I always did what was right by the customer, and because of that, I was so rare. Therefore, I had my customer's trust and I was successful. Interviewers outside the O ate this line up and loved it. Retool, differentiate yourself from the company and get out while you can under your own steam. It was the greatest gift I ever gave myself.

Oracle hasn't been a growth organization in decades.

I've worked at some of those "best places to work" firms. While they were growing fast it was fun: big raises, team events, stock awards, etc. Then when the growth tapered off they became Mr. Hyde: layoffs, wage freezes, coworker backstabbings, negative performance reviews, etc. At one of those places I had a manager rake me over the coals even though my performance was just as good as during prior years, and he told me that this was the new normal and that I'd best learn to jump higher, much higher.

And for every fun place there are 99 not fun places. Oracle is just one of the 99. If you can get an offer from a Unicorn, go for it. Just understand that it probably won't last very long. I know this from personal experience.

The difference between oracle and other companies is that oracle treats employees like sh-- in good and bad times; most other companies try to only do that it bad times

"WTF are you talking about."

That CEOs only care about profits. Sure, when times are good some show a little generosity, but when the crazy growth ends they suddenly transform into hard nosed jerks and the layoffs and wage freezes begin. Or do you really think only Oracle is like that?

" go work for a company where management cares about the employees as is committed to treating them well"

I would posit that there is no such thing, only that some companies are worse than others.

LE, MH, SC and their minions could not care less about you, all they care about is themselves and their own money. Oracle is broken, go work for a company where management cares about the employees as is committed to treating them well and fairly. Oracle is just plain toxic and totally beyond redemption. Oracle is hell with LE the devil himself!

if you are such an employee, as you described above, I do not see a reason why you would be sidelined for salary raises, or stocks.

Fact of matter if, work always counts. If you are working as hard as you say, and bringing the value, you are going to shine in you Org, no matter if your boss supports you or not. There will be enough people taking notice of your deeds. You could suffer for few years, but game will change very quickly and good will come to you.

Problem is - most of us believe we are placing our best game on show. but the reality is different. Talk to your peers, get some mentor, and explain the situation. I guarantee you if you look inside, and improve, some good will happen.
