Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

GM Public Relations

Hopefully after this is all said and done, the majority of GM’s PR team is cut. I understand the end goal - slimming down but this could and should have been handled much better by a fortune 500 company that puts their customers and ‘employees’ first. They put profits first before customers, hence why the safest vehicles are the most expensive after crazy packages and options. This mass layoff leaked to the press on Friday but GM would not comment saying ‘we care about our employees and will share this news with them first’.

GM’s Pat Morrissey stated on Friday in the Freep that “our employees are our priority and we will communicate with them first”. Instead of finding out from GM or management what was to happen this week, it was from a neighbor calling telling our family to put on the news.

Could have been handled better in the sense of having employees still working their tail off while walking around on pins and needles for 2+ months waiting to find out their fate. Morale is way too low. Management could have said this is 100% performance based and those low performers would begin to worry but others could breathe a little. Teams are already shorthanded enough where customer service and quality has taken a hit.

You're assuming the managers aren't laid off. My manager was the first one gone today and my team wasn't even hit today. So we would have no manager to lay us off. I agree though they could have communicated the date and process much better.

This could have been handled better in the following way -

Instead of ppl being called by HR , they could have given the manager the responsibility to share this news with the affected employees. Also they should have done this on January 15th!

Have to satisfy all 3 stakeholders...can't cater to 1 or 2 then kick the others in the teeth.

Customers, Employees, Shareholders.....all 3 are equally important. MANY businesses are too stupid to realize this and try to rob Peter to pay Paul, meaning they short change one in order to please the other. Many times it's the employees that take the shaft in favor of shareholders or customers. YOU can't allow this to happen or let anyone treat you less than the others.

I am kind of curious how people think this could be handled better really?
