Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

Is there a set number?

I was just wondering, does Union Pacific leadership has a set number of people they want to get rid of and are slowly working towards that number, or is this one of those situations in which they just keep laying off for as long as it can be financially justified?

I think 30% is a number to head toward, but if they can find areas to cut and still make money, they’ll keep cutting. I think they’ll cut until they realize they’ve cut too far and slowly trickle new hires in to reach the sweet spot. They’d do away with everyone if they could. We’re just like a desk or a locomotive. If they don’t need a person, it’s a win for the bottom line, just like a truck or a box car.

30% of entire workforce is different number from 30% from each department. It's only the same assuming equal sizes of departments and that isn't true. Math here bros

30% of the workforce is exactly what was stated. At that time there were over 42000 employees, so 30% of 42000 is 12,600 so about 12000 employees will lose their jobs.

There is a set number. 30% of every department needs to be cut, management only. I haven’t heard a set number for our agreement teams. They took a snapshot of every department’s numbers, then said 30% by 4th quarter 2019, but at least 10% by 12/31/18. The second 10%, not sure but would guess by end of second quarter if they evened it out. Some groups did all the 30% in one shot while others are ripping off the bandage slowly. Fritz explained it all on a town hall, third quarter last year maybe. You can look it up and watch it.
