Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

TRACK employees.

If Mary is trying to build GM for the future it doesn't make sense for her to include brand new TRACK employees. These folks are normally the cream of the crop at their respective colleges. These are the folks that will lead GM into the new designs and electric cars. The more GM TRACK employees that are laid off the harder it will be for GM to recruit from universities in the future.

I’ve worked with a lot of people at GM with jobs ranging from TRACK to technical fellows and I’ve got to say that I’ve been thoroughly unimpressed with some people at all those levels. The job is what you make of it, for those TRACK saying “if senior level people hadn’t taken me under their wing I’d be helpless” or “I had nothing to do”, ask for more responsibility. Take on a project that proves what you are worth. When I was in TRACK my coworker tried to hold my hand every day. I talked to him about it, worked my a off and got loads of responsibility and respect. I’ve worked with people with 20+ years of experience who I wouldn’t trust to watch my dog on the weekend, let alone make million dollar decisions. They are everywhere and at every level. Age and inexperience are bull s_ excuses. Make the job what you want it to be, but don’t get mad if that wasn’t enough. Obviously this doesn’t apply to all the layoffs, we’ve lost some good engineers.

I thought TRACK was just a place to put social justice hires?

As someone who finished TRACK last year I’m not sure how you believe TRACK employees will lead GM into the future. Most (myself included) are completely clueless until someone shows them the ropes. I felt the program was a waste of time and I got little out of it. If it wasn’t for senior engineers that took the time to help me develop then I would be useless. I know people about to finish school that have TRACK offers to start this summer. GM should cancel those offers and retain knowledgeable engineers instead of people with little experience. The only downside to this would future candidates avoiding GM.

FYI not all of us younger/TRACK engineers are as out of touch as OP.

Wouldn’t have been mad if they just laid off all TRACK employees makes my job a lot less stressful honestly

I can't believe this ignorant post in my 20 years of working here I can hardly think of a more inept group of employees than people from this TRACK program. GM should end this program now and use another method to recruit young talent.

I literally have to hold every TRACK employees hand when I work with them and we are around the same age. These are absolutely not the group of people who are going to lead GM design and create electric cars. If GM is looking for that type of young talent they better pay for high level talent first.

Both of the TRACK employees I knew (they were only 7 months in) got laid off. One was smart, the other couldn't find her way out of a paper bag. Both came from the same school too.

When I met their fellow TRACK friends, it was so clique and disgusting. Arrogance at its finest.

And I'm only a couple years older than they are.... and I was never TRACK.

Fun fact. TRACK employees cannot achieve “exceeding expectations” on performance reviews. How does this factor in when lay offs are based on performance? No employees are promised to have a job, TRACK or not. At least the sentiment that GM hired too many new hires as a reason for the lay offs should subside since clearly new hires are being laid off as well. Lastly, being in a rotational program doesn’t automatically mean you’re a 21 year old with no bills or responsibilities. I know several with families they support or who moved across the country to work for GM and now get 2 weeks of pay to figure it all out. Very sad for everyone involved.

Most of the TRACK employees are mediocre. I can’t believe your arrogance.

There's no way that TRACK are cream of the crop. I've worked with a few, some are good, some are just plain terrible.

TRACK employees are just like any other employee, some good some bad. I've worked with a few bad ones. At the end of the 18 month rotation they aren't guaranteed a job. If none of the groups want them they are released. This happens.

They had to have an even distribution of age and gender. I’ve worked with a lot of TRACK students. While some are smart hard workers, others are far from “the cream of the crop.” I’m guessing it’s the low ones that were released

What’s more hilarious is that there were some TRACK meetings held where leaders had told the TRACK engineers to “not worry” and they “their jobs are safe”..... totally opposite of what I’m seeing. What a joke. 49
